IIRC, James Blish mentions it in **[Spock Must Die!**, the second Star Trek novel (the first if you don’t count “kid’s books” – even those written by Mack Reynolds). He mentions it in his novelizations, too, I think.

When Paramount eventually found out, they had hysterics, demanding that he pull the characters from the book at once and never mention them again. It directly led to David leaving the book, and drifting away from the Star Trek universe.**

Peter David has hardly “drifted away” from the _Trek_ universe! He writes the “New Frontier” series and the most recent [installment](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671042408/qid=1006982767/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_10_5/102-0486020-3356929) has just been published. What’s unique about his series is that nearly every regular character is his own creation, the lone exception being Lt. Commander Shelby, from the two-part TNG episode [“The Best of Both Worlds.”](http://www.startrek.com/library/episodes_tng_detail.asp?ID=68454) (The one where Picard becomes a Borg.) David has also written at least one “New Frontier” comic book. (I read it.)

> How do the Star Trek novels and comic books fit into the Star Trek universe?
>
> As a rule of thumb, the events that take place within the live action episodes and movies are canon, or official Star Trek facts. Story lines, characters, events, stardates, etc. that take place within the fictional novels, the Animated Adventures, and the various comic lines are not canon.
>
> There are a couple of exceptions to this rule: the Jeri Taylor penned novels “Mosaic” and “Pathways.” Many of the events in these two novels feature background details of the main Star Trek: Voyager characters. (Note: There are a few details from an episode of the Animated Adventures that have entered into the Star Trek canon. The episode “Yesteryear,” written by D.C. Fontana, features some biographical background on Spock.)

Screw you, Paramount. You don’t get to have it both ways. Bastards.

Fair enough. How 'bout “…led him to drift away from the Star Trek universe for a while, and pen a few funny/bitter Star Trek columns for CBG before eventually drifting back.”

Admittedly, poetic license writ large.
BUT, writ by Gene Roddenberry, first season, when computers filled a room.

And a damn good episode in terms of plot and character development.

Yeah, in 1967 you couldn’t have had Pike using a Stephen Hawking-style voice synthesizer…nobody would’ve bought it.
