My insurance agent assured me that the cheapest way to go was to put my son on my policy and have his car in joint names. However, what they did not tell me was that my umbrella insurance premium would more than double. As my son has no assets to be sued for, it ended up being cheaper for him to get his own policy with lower liability coverage than I would need, and have sole ownership of the car.
I also wouldn’t trust online quotes. The company I’m with quoted me something like 1000$/year on their website (one-way only on an old car) but when I called and they looked over my data, it came down to less than 300$/year, and I was able to get a discount through my school (alumni) that I didn’t see on the website.
Another company, when I looked online, wanted 6000$/year (this was in Ontario… insurance is way lower in Quebec!), but when I finally looked around, I was able to get 1500$/year for the exact same coverage.
Seriously, call the companies - do not rely on their websites. They certainly have ways to lower your costs which aren’t on the website, they also can get you your previous insurance info, etc. Just because it isn’t on the internet, doesn’t mean it isn’t there (I fall into that trap a lot!)
