Card Stolen, will I get my money back?

I made an error, but it is far from absolute nonsense, and you entirely missed my point. Please re-read the quote I included and the first sentence of my post. I was not discussing check digits as a security device.

I’m pretty sure you’re going to get your money back. But talk to you bank immediately about what you need to do to make it happen. It isn’t exactly the same thing, but recently someone stole a check from us and stole $2400 from our account with a laughably incompetent forgery of my signature. It took two months to get our money back because Wells Fargo was utterly incompetent and kept getting their wires crossed on which forms were required and getting them processed. Luckily we maintain enough of a liquid float to make this just an inconvenience but it’s easy to see how it could be more serious for others.

Now our bank account is as isolated as I can make it. I will never get a debit card. We have an ATM card for cash withdrawals. I use credit card, bill pay (which for individuals like landscapers and day cares involves the bank mailing out checks without our account details), or cash to pay for stuff. In theory you’ll get your money back but it being your money not the credit card company’s does make a big difference.

As a data point, I hand enter a lot of credit card numbers. As a result, I mistype a some of them as well. Exactly one time, that I know of, did it go through. I only say ‘that I know of’ because I got a charge back a few months later over it and when I pulled up the number I charged vs the number I was supposed to charge I had swapped two digits or replaced one with another or made some other very small error. When ever I think about that, I’m always surprised that it went through.

Regarding the CID and address verification, I’ve never had that, being right or wrong, kick decline a card. It’s just there as an extra layer of proof (mainly for me, the merchant) that I was talking to the person holding the card, or at least someone that had that extra information. IIRC, if the CID or AVS comes back as wrong, I’m supposed to decide from there if I want to decline the card.

Also, not that it really matters to the discussion, if I do key in a number wrong, it’s the machine that catches it. It’ll know before it even begins to communicate with the outside world.
