I pretty much live a car free life - public transit to and from work, and pretty much anywhere I’d want. I like driving, I just don’t like sitting in traffic or trying to find parking. I recently had to drive a Uhaul to help my sister move to a downtown apartment, and of course, we were finished at 4:30 on a Friday. Ugh…the horror.
Large, densely populated urban centres with good mass transit make living without a car not only possible, but practical. This isn’t true everywhere.
I missed the editing window, but I wanted to clarify further because I didn’t intend to comes across as snippy, but in some places not having a car places some real restrictions on a person’s life.
Yes, I know what you mean. In most places in the western US, it seems like the local governments simply take it for granted you’ll be driving a car by the time you’re in high school and so don’t develop public transport. And I do remember some cold bicycle rides through the snow in wintertime Albuquerque.
I was car-free by choice until the age of 35. Then I moved to a city where getting round without a car is a full-time job in itself. I’m working towards modifying my lifestyle to the point where I can be car-free again.
