Nitpick: Northerly winds in the southern hemisphere (by which I assume you mean winds from the north) also deviate to the east.
And the phenomenon is called the Coriolis effect. It’s more pronounced the faster you’re moving, so getting up slowly and carefully (which you’d probably be doing anyway) will mitigate it.
