# Carter RIP thread - why not a new thread?

No objection here - just curious.

I was looking for a thread on Carter’s death. When I saw [this thread,](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/rest-in-peace-jimmy-carter-who-turned-100-on-october-1st-amazing-has-died-dec-29-2024/1004838/122) I was surprised to see it was the tag end of an ongoing thread.

Just wondering why his death did not merit a separate thread, instead of making folk scroll down 120 posts or so?

I wondered the same thing, except I saw the new RIP thread first, but it was locked and merged into the other one.

The existing thread was already acting as the memorial thread when the new thread was started.

Additionally, the new thread was already getting political, so the best course of action seemed to be to merge and change the title again.

I don’t think merit has anything to do with it.
