Sirius XM is doing a round-the-clock tribute playing his countdown shows on the 70’s channel. Not sure how long that will last, but the Saturday show is always a hoot to listen to. He played a lot of songs that never are heard today.
A good friend of mine spent the better part of the 1980s logging the countdowns as they happened. Casey’s passing has inspired a flood of memories and a catch-up text to reminisce.
No matter where our lives have taken us and whatever stars we have reached for and grabbed, we still keep our feet on the ground by maintaining and looking after the friendships of our youth, the foundation of what made us adults.
Thanks for this lesson, Casey.
Casey Kasem was also the voice of Cliffjumper in The Transformers. (The 1980s cartoon, not the Michael Bay movies)
The intial report when they found him are puzzling in hindsight. The report said that basically he was ok and alert. From what came out later, he had a bedsore, and hasn’t been alert for a while.
RIP Casey. He was definitely a regular part of my teenage years.
He was actually a DJ there? I didn’t know that particular bit of trivia. I would’ve thought he’d more likely be on KAAY than sharing the mic with Brother Hal. ![]()
In reading some memorial articles about him, I see a lot of people who thought he was leading edge in some way.
Growing up on Big Boss Radio, he was basically a nostalgia act by the time AT40 hit the big time. Very retro sound. Great if you liked that kind of DJ, but not cool, hip or anything of the sort.
The main thing is the guy just plain lasted a loooong time. That’s quite an achievement in syndicated music-based radio.
Yeah they were lengthened episodes with celebrity guest stars, everyone from Mama Cass to Jerry Reed.
Bwahahahahahaha
I first listened to Casey when Led Zep’s Presence was #1 for quite a few weeks. I tried to search but couldn’t find when exactly ~April 1976 .
Anyhow, Scooby Lives On. RIP
I think you may be confusing two stations.
KRLA, near Los Angeles, California, was the station where Casey worked.
KLRA was the station in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Dang. Call-sign dyslexia. My mistake.
