Casino Royale thread (open spoilers after p 4)

Pound her ovaries out? Ewwww. Is that a reference to a movie or song?

Mild spoilers for The Dreamers, not Casino Royale:

Very hot! Twisted? Well, yeah. The French are Different. Let’s put it this way…incest is implied but not shown. The “plot” (such as it is, which is not a criticism) centers on a French brother and sister and an American exchange student they befriend, who of course has the hots for the girl. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it but I seem to remember that the siblings didn’t have sex with each other, but that they enjoyed each other’s sexuality, and took it for granted. An attitude of “yeah, isn’t my sister hot?!” rather than “You think my sister’s hot? Ewww!” They also loved to prank around and play erotic mind games with the American. Definitely don’t watch it if menstruation grosses you out (it certainly doesn’t seem to bother the two males…they’re not Into It, which would be REALLY gross, but they treat it as perfectly normal when she starts her period during sex with the American, and when she’s free-flowing while taking a bath…with them. I was a bit grossed out but at the same time I thought it was a very refreshing attitude. Menstruation is a normal bodily function, and the guys understand that). However, that’s a very tiny part of it. Eva Green was very good, exceptionally hot (and I say that as a hetro female) and I absolutely LOVED the time frame. It’s set in Paris at the time of the Cinémathèque française protests, when the director Henri Langlois was fired and the resulting ruckus caused the center to be shut down. The 3 are huge cinema fans and spend almost all their free time at the movies or talking about films. They even try to re-create certain film scenes, such as the running-through-the-Louvre scene in Bande à part (which I’ve never seen, unfortunately). Totally useless even more off-topic trivia: Quentin Tarantino’s production company is named A Band Apart after that movie. Bande à part, not The Dreamers.

Back to Casino Royale, like Pochacco (I remember your post about Steve McQueen!) I’m also very pleased with the response the movie is getting by critics and the public, based on people in this thread and other, non-Bond message boards (I haven’t checked what the hard-core Bond fans are thinking). It’s still 94% on the Tomatometer, and could end up being the best-reviewed widely-released film of the year! (right now it’s 4th of all films released this year, after the 3D re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Queen and the documentary Deliver Us From Evil, both in limited release)

It might sound wacky, but it’s not out of the question that Daniel Craig could get an Oscar nomination. Stranger things have happened. I’m not an Oscar trivia person so I don’t know what other action/adventure stars might have gotten nominations in the past. Sigourney Weaver got one for Aliens, which is horror/adventure-ish, sorta. He wouldn’t win, but it’s a possibility. If not for this one, then maybe one of the next two (he’s definitely signed up for them) if the scripts don’t let him down.

In my opinion, Craig is the first Bond actor good enough to get a nomination, for playing Bond, at some point. Connery won an Oscar for The Untouchables, but was never nominated for a Bond film. I like Connery as an actor, but he’s always, well, Sean Connery. You never forget that it’s Sean Connery, no matter the role. Connery was never typecast as James Bond, because he’s always been typecast as Sean Connery. I also think Craig is good enough that even if Casino Royale makes him a star, which it should, he’s not going to get typecast as either James Bond or Daniel Craig.

I will prognosticate and bet Craig gets a Golden Globe nomination.

She looked like a cross between a youthful Charlotte Rampling and Sophie Marceau, need I explain that its a very good thing?

Her accent sounded English with a bit of French creeping in, was that a deliberate part of her character?

Two laughs from the film, Bond’s unexpected retort to the bartender who asks him if his drink is to be shaken or stirred and the sudden moan of pleasure from a woman in the audience when Vespa describes Bond’s skill with his little finger

No, she was born in France. Her mother’s French, and her father’s Swiss. She sounds just the same being interviewed.

No. Never.

Pushkin- your Rampling/Marceau observation is spot-on.

“He disagreed with something that ate him.”
He returns with a hook in another novel.

I saw it tongiht and found it great. I’m glad there is an effort to return to the novels rather than super villians, gadgets and sex objects.

I can’t help but mention that I was awaiting Mrs. Plant’s comment on Bond walking out of the water. She remarked, “That’s a military saddle.”

No explanation necessary. I’ll be in my bunk.

I just saw it and I agree - that is one beautiful woman! Move over, this bunk’s getting crowded.

Nope, just that I’d like to get all hot and sweaty with her and not give up until parts started to break. Her sexiness is enhanced by the fact that she’s Bond’s intellectual equal. Rowrr, rowrr.

Ha, I think your parts would start to break first.

God yes!
I love that this movie has everything: thrills, chills, suspense, action, humor, scenery, a story, eye candy for both men and women. And it’s smart! Nits can be picked regarding length and other minor things, but the filmmakers could hardly have done a better job putting together a complete package of entertainment.

Couldn’t agree more with all of the above. I loved this movie. It’s a great film, not just a “Bond” flick. “Nobody says it better…” than Equipoise.

I saw it! Great flick!

Surely the “our organization” mentioned by the baddies is…

SPECTRE?!

I think they were terrorists and the bad guys who finance them.

M. said something about “how I miss the Cold War”.
I really would have liked to see the original novel filmed, but they’d miss out on a lot of the movie going public if the setting was fifty years ago.

But…SPECTRE is the SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and ExtortionWhich would fit perfectly, no?

But to actaully mention that organisation would violate Kevin McClory’s copyrights, would it not, so they remain as “they who must not be named”.

mm

SMERSH is mentioned in the novel, is said to report directly to the long dead Beria. Both organizations, fictional or not were creatures of the USSR, which no longer exists in 2006.

mamboman, what’s the deal with Kevin McClory?

But, but… think of the poor, innocent product placement! Who’s gonna spend millions to advertise their products in a movie set in the fifties?

I wonder how much the advertisers payed… I think every freaking car in that movie was a Ford, and every piece of electronics was by Sony. Oy.

Oh, and having seen Eva Green in this pic, and having seen her nude photos from The Dreamers, all I can think is…Pussieeeeee!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s a chance I’m willing to take in the name of fighting ignorance!
