Catholic priest appeals to Donald Trump to end abortion

A very quick read of your cite suggests that a contributor to illegal abortions being performed by physicians was that physicians weren’t actually 100% (or had differing legal views) on what constituted an illegal abortion. With that in mind, a carefully-worded law or wider spread of accurate information could well have a very significant effect on the number of illegal abortions provided by physicians. Likewise, an additional point towards the increasing safeness of illegal abortions per your cite is that physicians who weren’t prepared to perform the procedure themselves were able and willing to refer to other physicians who would; again, a carefully-worded law could well affect this number, too.

Really, the other problem of going back to pre-legal abortion or stricter shades of legality is whether laws that are suggested are comparable in scope and effect to them, too.

Gonna admit I had a hard time making it through that paper.

Now, I am not a stickler for cites from this century, as such, but that cite was nearly 60 years old.

It’s pretty terrible, especially parts like “it is hardly ever necessary today
to consider the life of a mother as threat-ened by a pregnancy.”

There is no cite on your 90%, just that it was “and even more important, the conference estimated that 90 per cent of all illegal abortions are presently being done by physicians” an estimate of “the conference”. Not sure what that means.

But in any case, it does talk about how doctors would break or bend the rules because they disagreed with the draconian laws, or at least refer women to doctors who would perform these illegal procedures.

If you are expecting any sort of similar thing, with your 90% of abortions being performed by doctors, you will need to make sure that your abortion laws aren’t too strict.

This was the case, because even though it was technically illegal, the consequences were not too great, and enforcement was pretty lax (you almost had to turn yourself in).

If you are looking to change the abortion laws so that they are only nominally in effect, then some of these illegal abortions will be continue to be done safely.

If you actually pass strict laws that are enforced, and punish physicians harshly, I don’t think you are going to see that sort of number, instead you are going to see a raising number of self administered abortions.

Your 2-8% (as estimated by the conference) will rise dramatically.

If you pass the types of laws that you seem to be in favor of, it’ll be pretty close to 100%

Advances in medical care to which she would not avail herself, as if she were allowed to avail herself of that medical care, she would have just had the abortion done by advanced medical care in the first place.

Will there be any sanction against a woman seeking medical treatment for a botched abortion? If not, you are going to see alot of women poison or otherwise traumatize themselves to induce a miscarriage, then show up at the hospital for treatment. If so, you are going to see exactly the same thing, except you will be needing to send these women to jail after they are stable, and you will be finding dead women who were afraid to go to the hospital. I am not sure which of those scenarios is preferable to you.

Personally, I would avoid the situation by allowing a woman to make her own medical decisions without interference from the govt, but then, I’m a liberal, not a small govt conservative like yourself.

The diocese wasn’t too pleased with him for doing so, and he’s been in hot water with them for years. In fact, he’s currently under investigation.

Sorry about the old cite but is hard to get new cites on illegal abortions when abortion has been legal for almost 45 years.
I assume that some physicians will still perform abortions after they are made illegal just as some physicians do other illegal things.
Women who are injured in illegal abortions would still seek medical help just as people who overdose on illegal drugs still seek medical help. The laws before Roe v Wade did not generally provide sanctions for the women who were injured in abortions and there is no reason to think the new laws will either.
I share your disinclination to have government interfering in medical decision and I hope Trump appoints someone to the FDA who shares our feelings but in situations that involve the killing of innocent people I feel that it is the government’s duty to prevent those killings if possible.
