Why in the world would not listening be the correct response? There are two sides in an important topic, where we all need to know the answer. So why in the world would that push you to stop listening, and ignore everything? Why wouldn’t you try to figure it out?
The virus can’t go away on its own, you know. Ignoring it just means more people get sick (maybe with permanent damage) and/or die. Maybe even people you care about. Maybe even you.
You may not personally need the data. But those actually trying to figure this thing out do. The only way to stop a disease is to learn more about how it works.
Don’t turn anti-science simply because you hear two sides debating in tones you may not like.
With the White House in charge of the numbers, look for the number of new cases to drop to zero in mid October. Yet another outrageous stunt that would have had the GOP in the streets with torches and pitchforks had a Democrat done 1/100 of it.
Of course the MAGAbots are thrilled. My halfwit brother in law shared a post that went “President T—p is all hospital Covid test results sent to a data bank in DC. He just cut the CDC and State fraudsters off at the knees!”
This @ThelmaLou. News organizations should be screaming about this blatant corruption.
Hey, data is my thing, I collect and disseminate it. It’s never perfect. Right now I’m working on a reverse 911 database. If there is say a wild fire raging and you’re ordered to evacuate you will get a phone call. If somehow your phone number is missed, or you miss the call, you might be inclined to find out why your neighbors are all packing up and moving out. So while you did’t get the call, you end up with the information.
Trump hiding data really, really pisses me off. I don’t know what crime it would be, but it should be something.
Not listening is the correct response when your normal channels of information is biased in such a way that it makes it hard to get current/correct information, so I go look at multiple sources.
When I say I quit listening, i meant I quit listening to everyone else
I’ll not be going anti-science for quite some time.
I could be off here, but I see this as more evidence that the President and other like-minded Republicans have given up on trying to actually control coronavirus and are instead looking for ways to maximize the chaos, meaning that they’re willing to let it rage out of control in hopes that it’ll scare democrats from going to the polls in November. In the meantime, the Trump’s already indicating that he’s fine if the postal service doesn’t work and he’ll block funding if he can screw with mail-in voting. And if that doesn’t work, they’ll leave it to their new postmaster to throw in a few more complications. November’s going to be a mess.
I don’t think they are trying to maximize chaos. I think they want the economy back AT ALL COST. Why does the orange moron want schools open? So parents can go back to work. So all businesses are open. So the economy is up in time for the election.
Nothing to do with education, him and most of his minions don’t give a crap about the kids. Including our bimbo Secretary of Education.
There was an article a few days ago about how Republican officials and operatives are trying to get Trump to stop fighting mail-in voting. The thing is, many Republicans are also afraid to go to the polls because of the epidemic and now Trump is telling them not to vote by mail. So they may just skip voting altogether.
As far as Dems avoiding the polls: While Trump has a enthusiastic base, much bigger than Biden’s, there’s an even bigger group that is enthusiastic anti-Trump. They’re going to vote against Trump even if the Black Death comes back.
Then why aren’t you disturbed that the administration is actively impeding the functioning of science, by trying to destroy or muddy key data?
That data might show that it’s safe to reopen schools. It might show that it’s safe to re-open schools, but only if the children wear masks, or only for younger kids, or … It might show that outdoor sports events are safer than indoor concerts and movies. It might show any manner of actionable things. Science is on the side of continuing to collect data as well as possible.
Because I am not necessarily worried about the date that we have/had?
Primarily because it has been turned into a political weapon (and yes, both sides did it)
In other words, Trump is becoming the controversial one-issue referendum that hacks tack onto ballots to pull voters off their couches – except that he’s an actual person, not an issue.
You are going to inadvertently end up ignoring data because you are no longer going to be able to access accurate or full data. Only manipulated or truncated data.
You will not be able to be informed or pro-science.
I am a property/casualty actuary. I work with data every day. All data has errors and biases. That’s the nature of real-world data. The correct way to handle it is to investigate the sources of data and adjust/add error bars/otherwise make the best of the data that is available.
My assistant probably spends 40% of his time tracking and fixing systemic data errors, we have two other employees who spend a good chunk of their time fixing individual errors (one of whom also works on systemic errors) and you know what, we don’t throw away any of our data.
Not throw it away or hide it.
The administration is discarding data sourced directly from hospitals, which is among the best quality data we have. This is anti-science and will hurt us in our attempts to keep Americans safe and productive.
Have you heard the expression “the perfect is the enemy of the good”. The data we have is good. Throwing it away or hiding it from doctors, scientists, and journalists because it isn’t perfect is an anti-science position.
I’m a GIS professional and have been for 30 years. Yes there is bad data that we correct. It’s an ongoing process. Always will be, always has been.
It’s bad enough that data gets misinterpreted, and is often incorrect. But if it is 99% accurate, you have something to work with. That doesn’t mean we should not try to fix it and make it more accurate. Ignoring data is not going to help. Well it will help Trump.
Knowing that Trump is going to deliberately misrepresent or hide the data for his own purposes to get elected is, considering ~140,000 deaths, a crime in itself. Put it on the list.
We all know that Trump is trying to hide the data.
