No column to link to here, just a comment on Cecil’s columns. First, why is there no date indicated on most of the older columns. Afraid of dating yourself, freak? Many of your columns are just wrong now. How about some updates? You can’t be that busy with doing one column a week. BTW, the date that is listed _directly below the title of the column_ is the original date of the column. ---

However, for the undated columns you can get a rough idea of when the column appeared based on the book in which they were reprinted. For example, in the above URL the “a1\_209” means the column appears on page 209 of the original _The Straight Dope_, which was first published in 1984. The other volumes are: a2 = _More of the Straight Dope_ (1988) a3 = _Return of the Straight Dope_ (1994) a4 = _The Straight Dope Tells All_ (1998) a5 = _Triumph of the Straight Dope_ (1999) I have gone on record as predicting that a6 will be called _The Straight Dope Goes to Hawaii_. The text of [http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2\_358.html](http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_358.html) mentions 1979, and the column appears in _More of the Straight Dope_, so that narrows it to 1979-1988. I would guess the early 1980s. ---

Columns first posted online in our AOL days do not have dates. These are mostly from books 1 and 2 (the a1-… and a2-… columns). As we cycle through classic columns we are adding dates as well as Slug’s illustrations. At the present rate we’ll be finished in five or ten years. We think in terms of the long haul around here. ---
