The last few cold winters we have had have been bad for frost damage to all kinds of structures. I volunteer at a local historic cemetery and that’s what we are putting our dangerously bulging catacombs down to. (Yes they are now shored up, while we figure out the funding.) It seems possible that cracks have opened up in the roof structure which allowed the heavy rain in. Some people think they saw /heard water leaking just before the collapse.
