I’d like to add that two weeks ago, while my apartment was flooding and I was scurrying to get my bedsheets and such off the ground, I decided to backhand my metal katana-like ceiling fan that was on high power. It resulted in 10 stitches and I was required to get a tetanus shot and x-rays. Fortunately, the bone of my hand stopped the blade the second hit (lol).

Probably not a common occurrence, but I’m pretty petrified of this particular ceiling fan being on now. The wound has healed well though, so that’s a plus.

Funny anecdote that doesn’t really apply: My father used to be an A/C repairman. Y’know that motor and fan that blow air over the condenser coil (the outside bit of the A/C)? They reused good motors and fans from units they’d replaced as ceiling fans in the shop.

Note that it has a grille over it to keep fingers out, when it’s installed behind your house.

One time Dad walked into one (the shop ceiling was not all that high) and it chopped a one-inch notch into his baseball cap’s bill.

But your standard flat-wooden-bladed residential ceiling fans? It’ll smart like heck if you stand up and poke your head in one, and maybe break a finger. if you try to grab it But it’s perfectly possible to stop one with your fingers if you’re careful, as I have done many a time when installing/balancing them – crank it up to full speed to test the balance, turn it off, reach up and lightly touch it with fingertips to slow it down until you can grab it and stop it to adjust the weights, because screw waiting for it to spin down on its own.

Another old thread…

It reminded me of this, from 2002 though. Not quite what the OP had in mind; but…

> [@](#):
>
> A 16-year-old singer in the Mexican pop group Magneto, Ricardo Abarca, has had three fingers reattached after four were sliced off when he waved to fans while beneath the rotors of a helicopter.
>
> “The index finger and middle finger are completely recovered,” surgeon Gustavo Lopez said Wednesday. “We only have some problems with blood circulation in the little finger.”
>
> Abarca’s ring finger was not recovered after the accident on Saturday.
>
> Abarca, known as “Richi,” got off of a helicopter at Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport on Saturday and raised his hands in greeting to waiting fans. The still-whirling rotors sliced off four fingers.
>
> “They were dispersed over a radius of more than 100 meters (yards),” Lopez said, adding the operation to reattach the fingers required 14 hours.

Years ago I lived in a house with two roommates, and in one of the bedrooms there was a ceiling fan with \*metal \*blades. My roommate learned the hard way to not get out of bed and stretch- he ended up with a pretty nasty welt.
