I remember hearing from him that it was true. When he was in the zone his comedy was basically stream of consciousness. Sometimes things he heard before would come out of his mouth without him even realizing it. When he figured out what was going on he stopped watching other comics. The reputation from earlier in his career stayed with him. ---

He sort of admitted it several times in several sources including a '92 interview with Playboy, and later on with an interview with Mark Maron, but he never really sounded contrite. Even later on in life he never stopped lifting bits. I imagine it can’t be easy to live most of your life knowing most other comics hate your guts for one reason or another. Martin Short skewered Williams brilliantly on SCTV. Anyway, I wouldn’t put him on either this list or the “most despised” list, though he probably belongs on both to some.
