Does anybody remember the character of Gil from FRASIER? He was the so obviously gay food critic whose wife was “one of Seattle’s most prominent automotive repair technicians”. He was slightly more closeted than Leslie Jordan’s Beverly Leslie on WILL & GRACE. Here’s a question: You meet a LOT of those men in the south. I call them the "Queer Paw-Paw Brigade- effeminate aging or old men who were gay in a time and place where that wasn’t an option so they married and had kids and now talk incessantly about the grandbabies and the begonias in some order and can lisp during a sneeze. They range the gamut from exceptionally nice and wonderful people to absolutely disgusting old trolls, are often extremely religious, and make you double take whenever they mention their wife. They’re almost an archetype down here. They usually have the Gil or Leslie Jordan voice with a combination of southern bygone and acid bitch, so I think of them often as a southern phenomena. The question though: excepting gay priests, do other parts of the country that aren’t quite as conservative have these men? Would you be likely for example to meet an effeminate old Jewish guy in Brooklyn who prattles on about his baking and flowers he’s arranging for for his granddaughter’s bat-mitzvah, or a femme corn farmer in Indiana who decorates his tractor with seat covers he crocheted himself or an old married lawyer in Seattle who can talk for hours about how much he adored Gene Kelly? Or is it more of a Bible Belt thing? ---

Of course a person’s sexual orientation is what they say it is, at least until you have proof otherwise, so that compliments the “outed as straight” thing. Many gay men- probably most of the ones on the Dope and even those of us who aren’t generally closeted- have passed as straight before. ---
