Thompson’s first movie credit was from 1985, when he played himself, of all things, in the film _Marie_. Sissy Spacek had the starring role, in a stiry based on a real case of political corruption. ---

He was 71. I think “helped persuade” is a vast overstatement by the NYT, which should know better. Bush and Cheney came into office wanting to take out Saddam. As one commenter at Eschaton said, “they’d have found another monkey to dance that tune” if Chalabi hadn’t existed. ---

I’m really sorry… Really sorry that I did not have him on my list… Talk about being walking poison, besides the push for the invasion he also had a hand into purging Sunni politicians from positions of authority since the invasion, as the Times reported, “By doing so, he helped Mr. Maliki consolidate power and alienated Sunnis — two factors that set the stage for the renaissance of the Sunni insurgency that later metastasised into the Islamic State.” ---

A couple of years ago I had a themed list of celebrities who’d worked in the motion picture industry. I was going for the most deaths, not points, so all of my picks were between 95 and 100 years old. I got three points that year, but the oldest on the list, Douglas Slocombe, a reknowned cinematographer, is still with us and nearing his 103rd birthday. Did I make him immortal or is he on his own? ---

Two deaths, three points. 🙂 **Andrew 21** took the logical next step, disdaining points altogether and going for the supercentenarians. IIRC, most deaths is still a close contest between him and **Registered At Last** (who still leads the points contest by a measly four points, as she has for nearly five months now), but he’s got the lock on most unique corpses. ---
