Crud, it was known that Studio Ghibli was not likely to make it (it was winding down production and practically closing) after Hayao Miyazaki finally retired. It only took him several tries. But no, he did not die, another very important member of the studio was still there, but her death last week means that there is now less of a chance for the studio to come back: [http://www.konbini.com/en/lifestyle/animator-spirited-away-akira-makiko-futaki-died/](http://www.konbini.com/en/lifestyle/animator-spirited-away-akira-makiko-futaki-died/) > [@](#): > > Animator Behind Spirited Away And Akira, Makiko Futaki Has Passed Away > > She had caught the attention of Miyazaki after her work on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) and was involved in almost every one of his animations ever since. > > This included such masterpieces as Castle in the Sky (1986), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Porco Rosso (1992), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) and The Wind Rises (2013). > > Her last film with the studio was When Marnie Was There in 2014. > > Along with all of her Studio Ghibli successes Futaki also had a hand in producing animations for Akira (1988) and Royal Space Force: The Wings Of Honnêamise(1987). ---

A bad day to be a 60-mumble mumble ex hockey player. They don’t even get their own articles announcing their deaths … they have to share : [Rick MacLeish, 66 and Tom Lysiak](http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/rick-macleish-philadelphia-flyer-1.3608919), 63 deaths were both announced early today. The linked article contains lots of discussion of points, sadly both were pointless deaths for me. ---
