Only one.

It was 1962, a few days before my 14th birthday. I heard Marilyn Monroe had been found dead. I went into the backyard and gazed up at the clear night sky, at the stars. I let her death sink in. I felt tears in my eyes.

I’ve remembered that night all my life. I still don’t know why her death affected me that way, I wasn’t a big movie-star fan, Elvis and Dion and other rock stars were my real passion.

The moment passed, and it was just a moment. I went back inside and gave it no more thought. It was as if for just one instant the universe had paused, then in a heartbeat restarted.

As a huge fan of NASCAR, the deaths of drivers have always saddened me. Davey Allison, Neil Bonnett, Kenny Irwin, Adam Petty and Dale Earnhardt all went too early. But the only one that had me crying like a baby was Alan Kulwicki. I was at work and a fellow racing fan was working nearby listening to a Walkman radio. He suddenly dropped to his knees and turned white as a ghost. Tears started running down his face and in a quiet whisper he said “Kulwicki just died, plane crash”. I spent the next half hour or so in the restroom.

The exact thing happened to me. I think the main reason I cried was my dad was an Earnhardt fan and we had all gone out to dinner that night. On the TV while passing out of the restaurant I saw part of the Daytona 500 and thought “cool, Earnhardt’s winning!”

The fact that he was gone just hours later was pretty shocking to me as a 4th grader.

I don’t think I’ve every cried exactly, but some of these people’s deaths have left me profoundly sad - John Ritter, Princess Diana.

Oddly, I was incredibly sad when Anna Nicole Smith died. It just seemed like she was really turning her life around, and then her son died, and she died so soon after. The whole thing just struck me as being awful. And I felt terrible for her little baby girl and the circus that her life was going to become. To me it was just very sad.

One that has not been mentioned is River Phoenix, I was very saddened by the loss of what would have and had been a great talent.

Absolutely.

Not cry- but I was saddened with the death of karen Carpenter.

And Janis Joplin.

Hunter S Thompson. We really need the good doctor back now.

I’ve been deeply saddened by a few others, but I was in mourning over Hunter. A high school kid that hung out at my coffee shop brought in a picture of Thompson, Del Toro, and Depp he printed out on his inkjet and stuck it up on the bullitin board. it’s still there.

Mama Cass

Dream a little dream of me…

Molly Ivans and Hunter Thompson.

That was the only one that ever really got to me, too. My girlfriend called me at work to tell me the news, and I was walking around with a rain cloud over my head all day.

I was stunned when I heard about Diana’s death late that Saturday evening after, but didn’t cry.

Didn’t cry at his death either, but when I saw Knotts, fresh-faced and new, in TCM Remembers 2006, its Tribute to the Hollywood entities who died in 2006 that came out at the end of the year (at 3:13), I did cry – even for the ones I didn’t know. It was so beautifully done and the music was so haunting, I couldn’t help it.

My eyes welled up considerably, several times, after I heard about the death of Gerald Levert. I was a huge fan of his, but especially his hit Baby Hold On To Me, which helped me cry out the hurt of an ended love affair, so he was associated with sad feeling for me anyway.

Karen Carpenter.
John Denver
Elizabeth Montgomery

Walt Disney.

When I was a kid, I bawled like a baby.
