> One summer a friend of mine a year older than I was (20 at the time) got a “cushy” job with the state highway crew, was inside the drum cleaning it out, when someone turned it on (no lock-out/tag-out obviously). I can’t imagine a more horrific way to die.

Die? Sounds like a variation on the old Fun House revolving barrels.

The fun house barrels didn’t have big metal fins to chop and mix their contents.

On occasion, they’ll quite easily [decapitate a person](http://ftp.resource.org/courts.gov/c/F2/672/672.F2d.652.80-2052.html). (Nothng gruesome there, it’s just text of a court case.)

I’ll just [link to my nitpick](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=12917452&postcount=24) in the other cement truck thread.

Some times when they called, we just couldn’t do it, and when it did work out, we were able to fill about five or six post holes. It took us about 10 days to get everything done, but it saved us a couple of grand in the end. Totally worth it.

With us (and in general) they just take it back to the plant and pour the leftovers in to lock blocks. That’s how our lock blocks are made - with leftovers. It’s a slightly lucrative side business for the company.
