Some more clues: The movie is based on a French farce and has been remade in different languages around the world. Thelma Ritter plays the main character’s housekeeper and is sworn to secrecy. The arrival of the protagonist’s old buddy threatens to upset his elaborate scheme of multiple deception: “One up, one down, and one here.” The main character’s English fiancee likes to have kidneys for breakfast because “They’re good for the complexion.” Any more information would result in a complete giveaway if you’ve ever seen the movie. ---
