Goodluck Johnathan is out (see my 5 year old thread “[Predictions: the President of Nigeria](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=11988085)” for an account of his rise to the President’s seat). Apparently the people were dissatisfied with on going corruption in his administration. With the [NYtimes adding](http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/01/world/africa/nigeria-election-muhammadu-buhari-goodluck-jonathan.html?_r=0)that people were also annoyed from the government’s inability to contain violent Islamic extremists in the north (Boko Haram). What’s interesting is that Buhari is a former military dictator of Nigeria (he controlled the country for ~1.5 years in the early 80’s), 72 years old, and the first opposition leader to gain power by democratic elections -previously the ruling [People’s Democratic Party](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Democratic_Party_(Nigeria)) won all presidential elections (since elections were reinstated in 1999). Any thoughts? ---

I expect that many of their citizens will need our help getting their wealth out of their country, and will share it generously with us. ---

I suspect that Nigeria’s well being is going to depend much more on commodity prices than on the person in charge. Oil prices are low right now, which doesn’t look good for Nigeria. Hopefully I’m wrong. What’s Buhari’s stance on the Shariah law question?
