Maybe, maybe, in some cases. Archetypal symbals are sometimes easier to relate to. Good archetypal symbols, that is to say the ones that are done well, can be great for relating to because they represent something we all know.
I think it’s pretty hard to pretend that Tolkien’s characters are complex in the way that many modern characters are. That said, it’s also silly to claim that they are perfect or simple. And indeed, the tragic pride of characters is a constant theme in his larger work.
