Well, see, Mississippi had a little news event a while back. You may have heard of it. Was called Hurricane Katrina. There are still people living in FEMA trailers because of it.
That’s not relevant to the current point – the red states have been net federal tax consumers over the long term, not just after some specific event or other.
The spin is simple. “Charlie Rangel is proposing reinstating the draft!” (and it’s true.) But they leave out “So that the children of our political leaders and wealthy elite will be risking their lives along with the children of poor and middle class parents!” By minimizing or omitting the point Rangel hopes to make via his proposal, they make it sound like some wild-eyed piece of goofiness from crazy Demland. “Hey, look, those Dems are governing like idiots just like we said they would!” Rangle’s point is excellent, his method of proposing it, and his timing, are incredibly dumb.
Well, I just looked at what [FoxNews is saying](http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,230702,00.html?sPage=fnc.world/iraq), and it doesn’t jive with your statement. They’re the knig of “right wing media”, no?

> [@](#):
>
> Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel of New York repeated his call for reinstituting the military draft, which the administration has repeatedly said it doesn’t need, and which Congress rejected the last time Rangle brought it up.
>
> “There’s no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft,” Rangel, the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
>
> Rangel said he will introduce a bill next year requiring Americans to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18. He has said the all-volunteer military disproportionately puts the burden of war on minorities and lower-income families.

That’s a clear, concise, perfectly accurate representation of Rangel’s position. Frankly, I think you just made that quote up in your post.

Even to these dim eyes, it is perfectly obvious that **EC** means to paraphrase, after a fashion. I see no suggestion that its a direct quote, its more along the lines of “here’s what one of them might very well say”. I’ve seen it done here many times, it is an entirely reasonable rhetorical device, so long as a direct quote is not implied, and it is not.

Your pointing out the blazingly obvious, with its implication of dishonesty, is underhanded. You should clarfiy that last sentence to remove any such hint.

Except it’s not even a good paraphrase. And the quote itself isn’t important, because the point EC was trying to make was what he claims is being left out of the reports. So I’m suggesting that he made up the paraphrase based on his guess as to what the “right wing media” might be reporting, not on what such media, like FoxNews, is actually reporting.

All well and good, as far as it goes. But you are just as aware as I that the phrase “made it up” carries an implication, an unfortunate innuendo. And the prefatory “frankly” also implies that you are aware that you are about to make a statement that the adressee will find distressing.

Change the word “quote” to “paraphrase” in my original post on the subject.
