I, too, am rather lacking in current slang. Am I correct in surmising that “otaku” means “someone I want desperately but wrongly to believe I can look down upon”? Am I close? ---

I have no idea of the word’s connotation in _anime_ circles–for the record, I LOATHE _anime_–but in Japanese “otaku” just means a guy, a man. “Chas E.,” on the other hand, means “an unbelievably thick and doltish creature with less compassion than Saddam Hussein with jock itch and less intelligence than a seriously concussed garden slug.” ---

Hey, that’s QUEEN of the Assholes to you. Anyhoo, otaku apparently is slang for someone who is totally obsessed to the point of ignoring basic hygiene and society in general. Apparently, a Japanese version of the Trekkies? Chas, if you were half as smart as you claim, you would realize that my obsessions lie with obscure European Royalty from Victoria’s time until the 2nd world war, especially the Romanovs of Russia and King Aleksandar of Yugoslavia. ---

(I could go into the etymology of it, if you’d like. It’s really quite a fascinating word.) In NA anime circles it just means a fan of anime. (Actually, my first exposure to the word was on an Aussie TV show that was profiling the Otaku Brigade, a group of 2-way radio enthusiasts in Australia.)
