Check out the trailer for the new Mad Max movie..

One of my first short stories in college was about someone who thought and drove an awful lot like Max.
Its major criticism in class was that the hero was more vague than he needed to be and that nobody really liked any of the other characters because of their over-the-top flaws.

Except the car. Universally, Everyone loved the car (as it was written). That English Ford with the V8 Supercharger has been on my wish list since I was 14. And at 1:36 in the trailer, Its There.

Charlize is way cool. Tom Hardy is the closest we’ll get to Mel Gibson now.

But. They have The Car, and they got it Right.

I’m There.

(bolding mine)

I take it you’re not familiar with the series? :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you for that…in that case, I won’t waste my time.

I read how they were making the movie some time ago, and yeah that’s pretty cool. But 2 hours of nothing but car crashes and explosions? Not for me. I mean Mad Max had dialogue, Road Warrior had dialogue. Would it hurt to have people, like, talk?

Enjoy!

Well, I mean, there could be some long, quiet, existential scenes, too. Like Vanishing Point with crossbows.

Then it must be real.

Is it Carmina Burana?

Talking is not the only way to convey information, and film is able to exploit those other avenues well. Zabriskie Point, Eraserhead, Mel Brooks’ Silent Movie, El Topo, Punch-Drunk Love, *Blow-Up, 2046 are just a handful of examples of critically lauded and popular films that all have very little (in some cases arguably zero) dialogue.

Sorry to say, but judging from the trailer, there’s a bit of CGI in there (the remaining 20% maybe? Maybe - hopefully - less) …the car being lifted up by the wind/sandstorm at 1:58, for example. No doubt hyping up the actual stunts plays better to the media than talking about their CGI, though.

I understand and agree…but for some reason, I feel like there won’t be much actually communicated by this particular film. I may be wrong, but it’ll probably be another Transformers; an excuse for fights, fast driving and blowing stuff up. A genre I’m thoroughly bored of by the way, despite it’s apparent popularity.

Ahem.

That is no “English Ford.”

It’s an XB Falcon GT351 Coupe, made and sold exclusively in Australia, and modified for use in the movie.

I haven’t watched the trailer yet, but my first thought was that this will suck.

However, I’ve heard some good things:

Very limited CGI and lots of actual stunt action with real vehicles.

The plot of the movie is a giant chase scene that lasts the whole film.

The actors don’t have a lot of dialogue and their actions, not talking, is what gives them characters with depth.

I don’t know if all this is true, but it sounds like they’re heading in the right direction.

On a side note: I guess the areas in Australia where they shot the originals is all green and lush now so they couldn’t film there. You have to go to Africa to get the look and feel of a Mad Max movie these days. Who knew?

The dude on the catapult looking thing cracked me up.

I apologize; it was a term I’d heard often while growing up during movie discussions about the original (and obviously, it was the wrong term). Of Course it’s Australian… and that’s probably why, outside of a car show, I’ll never get to see one let alone drive one.

I’m not on the Exact other side of the globe, but I’mpretty close.

…And, although I typed the wrong name for the make and model here, I have STILL lusted for that car since I was 14…

So Tom Hardy’s making another movie in a car? I’m so in

MMmmmm…Charlize with a buzzcut.

I’m in!

Twice now (I think) someone has mentioned Transformers and I gotta tell y’all: I haven’t seen it. Well, not all of it. I borrowed the BR from some friends, thinking a giant robot action movie might be fun if kinda stupid… long story short, I lasted about 14 minutes I think. I couldn’t handle the stupid dialogue or the stupid handling of the stupid premise.

I get that you see this as “just another action movie” and that you already don’t care for the genre; that’s cool, dude.

But me, I love a good chase movie. The Raid: Redemption, Rumble In The Bronx, It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Smokey & the Bandit, Replacement Killers, Terminator, etc. I like Mr. Miller’s work and I like his ideas, both about stories and about films, and have high hopes that this movie will finally fulfill the promise of the original Mad Max.

Did they put all the CGI and green screen in the OP-linked trailer?

1:45 had me cracking up. (Where the guy kind of ‘pole vaults’ sort of in front of a distant action scene, which seemed to me to be very bald-faced greenscreening.)

The first trailer (linked later in the thread), though, seemed appealing. It may all look much better on a big screen anyway.

My brain just can’t accept that that is Tom Hardy after Charlie Bronson and that Batman movie

Hell, Bronson and Warrior are what give me hope that Hardy is right for the role. He was fucking awesome in both, but his performance in Bronson was, to me, perfect: he WAS Charlie Bronson.

's why every night we does the Tell, so that we 'member who we was and where we came from…
