Chevy Station Wagon?

Mercedes has one, too.

What I need (well, if I were really buying a car) is a wagon low enough so my wife can lift the canoes onto the roof rack by herself.

A Chevy Suburban with a step-ladder, then?

It came close but didn’t quite get there, but the Chevrolet Caprice sold in the Middle East is a rebadged Holden Commodore/Statesman built in Australia, where it is available in a station wagon body style. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be available outside of Australia.

All in all, it seems the Subaru Legacy would have to do if my wife totaled the VW.

AFAIC The last “real” American station wagon is the Ford Freestyle. I have a 2005 and we love it to pieces. It was called a crossover at the time but there’s no mistaking it for anything else but a station wagon.

A contributing factor was that the minvans and SUVs were in a different product category wih resprect to the CAFE milage standards. Perversely, eliminating the somewhat lower-milage wagons in favor of the significantly lower milage “light trucks” increased the manufacturers’ fleet averages, thus complying on paper with the CAFE rules, without actually realizing any overall reduction in fuel consumption.

I disagree, it doesn’t look like a true wagon. The belt line is too high.

Before the term Sport Utility Vehicle came into use (mid to late 80s?) the Suburban was called a station wagon by Chevrolet. Still is one to my sensibilities. Senselessly huge, however.
