Chicago Tourists

Perhaps the Citypass?

I’m buying one for when my out of state friend comes to visit.

Baseball would be fun but an afternoon game takes a large chunk of time from museums. A city pass worked well in NYC and I’ve purchased a 3 day CTA pass via Groupon for $5 off.

Any recommendations for Navy Pier. They have fireworks on Saturday evening.

This may be blasphemy but as a lifelong Chicagoan I find Navy Pier a bore. There’s a nice atrium garden, if you have kids the Children’s Museum is very good, and there’s plenty to eat and drink but there’s nothing to really do. It’s nice to see. A walk around the pier is great for taking in the Chicago skyline but frankly I’m bored of the place after about an hour. It’s a nice place to go for events like a play at the Shakespeare Theater or a concert but just hanging out there never held any magic for me. I suppose if you’ve never been there it’s worth an hour or two to check it out.

I agree, actually. Navy Pier is a pretty much a glorified shopping mall. Nice place for a walk, yes, but unless you’re getting on a boat or seeing a show… meh.

If my wife really wants to see “Cirque Shanghai: Year of the Dragon” then we’ll dine at the Navy Pier, see the show, stay for fireworks. Otherwise we’ll skip that one.

I always enjoy Navy Pier. The people watching is great, the views of the city are breathtaking, the food court is awesome. There is usually some sort of band playing somewhere along the dock. The beer garden is a perfect place to waste an hour or two. Have you checked out the Stained Glass museum? Very interesting stuff.

I wouldn’t want to spend all day on the Pier, but I always have a good time when I go there.

I didn’t mean to say I hate it, 2 hours there can be fun - but don’t plan on making a day of it.

Thanks for all of the tips. We spent most of Saturday at the Art Institute and most of Sunday between the Field and Shedd. We did the tourist thing with the Hancock Tower on Saturday afternoon and the Willis on Sunday. The Flat Top Grill Stir Fry was close to our hotel and accommodated the gluten restriction. I’m sure we could have done better with one of the steakhouses.
