Setting up a contract that confers all the rights as a marriage can be expensive and time-consuming. There are a myriad of legal ways marriage affects a person that cannot be easily or clearly documented via contract. A member of an unmarried partnership can be forced to testify against the other member. Marriages are recognized as valid in every state regardless of the origin of the marriage. A gay couple married in Massachusetts thinking of moving to Texas, say, for a job offer has to consider what it will mean to move to a place that doesn’t recognize their legal status. Not being able to get married throws wrenches into so many facets of life that straight people don’t even think about.

Yeah, it’s funny, isn’t it, how ‘free speech’ only seems to apply to reprehensible speech, not the calling out of such. Such a peculiar thing, it is.

Chick-Fil-A is apparently pretty addictive. A gay friend of mine and his partner are responding by _intending to eat there less often_.

They’re only starting to get close to me. I’m going to just say no.

the “my pleasure” thing is policy. so is the smiling and creepy politeness. Sadly im currently employed by them. The amount of control the owner/operators exert is Absurd. The manager i just replaced actually got fired because he forgot straws in a drive-thru bag according to other managers.

Now there’s an interesting idea. I wonder what the workers at the local Chick-Fil-A would do if A.C. and I would show up at their counter holding hands during winter. A.C. looks like a guy when her winter coat covers up her DDs.

I’m pretty sure the patrons & staff at a diner near where I used to work thought we’re a gay couple when we stopped in there one winter day.

And no matter what you say to these kids when ordering, they always reply “my pleasure.” It’s creepy. I want my fast food served to me by a sullen, stoned little punk.

I don’t enjoy their food, but having Stepford employees is a point in favor of ChickFilA. I like food service workers to be pleasant and to use standard, unaccented, English.

At the Chik-Fil-A near me, there are several black employees. I also know a couple gay kids who work there. They are both pretty open, and to the best of my knowledge don’t get any flak about it at work. I tried to ask one of the guys about it, but he sort of blew me off and said it was no big deal. He is very active in the community, volunteering for the gay and lesbian community center, amongst other things, so it isn’t like he doesn’t care. I didn’t press the issue (we were at a party), but if he said it wasn’t an issue at work, I assume it’s true.

I have never been in a Chik-Fil-A when a gay couple came to the counter, so I can’t answer that.

No.

I don’t think you _grasp_ the concept of free speech.

Here’s a primer: The post by **Ferret Herder** was an excellent example of free speech in action. Restricting people’s reaction to speech is infringing on free speech.

You’re welcome.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure I didn’t call for the US government to make the bad, bad man shut up, so what are you talking about, again? Because that’s how “freedom of speech” works in the US.

Last I checked, he got to say, ‘marriage is for one man and one woman because God says so!’ and I get to say, “right, fuck your chicken business, I’m eating elsewhere - and I think you’re a bigot.” He can say what he wants but isn’t guaranteed protection from the side effects of what he says, like people thinking he’s a douche.

Oh, and if you’re saying I’m a big meanie for boycotting, I’ll just note that I have also apparently been boycotting Jif peanut butter all my life, because it’s too sweet for my taste buds (last I checked). So don’t even bother to pull out any kind of “boycotting is EVIL!” argument. Everyone deprives multiple companies of their patronage for a variety of reasons, including disinterest. Plus groups like the American Family Association boycott [a ton of companies for being reasonable human beings towards gay people](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Family_Association#Boycotts).

I can see where you’re coming from with this, but I think we need a better comparison for gay marriage than what happened with segregation.

Segregation was violent, bloody, and the white community had general HATE and VITRIOL for the black community…and I’m just not seeing that here.

Not counting kids and teens, because I don’t think kids should be put in the same league as adults, there aren’t open air murders, huntings, lynchings, and blatant and obvious out and out _hate_ from the straight community to the gay community like their was for the blacks. I think you’re comparing the two situations apples-to-apples when it’s more like comparing the situation apples-to-cyanide laced apples with spikes coming out of it.

Unfortuntely I don’t have a more appropriate comparison to make.

If only those blacks had been in the closet about their blackness, maybe they wouldn’t have had to face all that hate either.

And how much of that difference is due to the fact that open hating of that sort isn’t tolerated as much any more? The hate is now hidden behind code phrases spoken in a friendly manner by clean cut representatives, but I think it’s still there. The violence is tempered by law, but the _desire_ for violence is still there.

I’m a gay guy and I give you all permission to eat at Chik Fil A. If you honestly worry about whether any dollar you spend anywhere is going to help profit a bigot, then you’re going to be worrying non-stop.

These little boycotts are cute and all, and sure they help you feel warm and fuzzy inside because you’re “doing the right thing,” but when it comes down to it, every dollar you spend on any sort of mega-corporation is going into the pockets of millionaires and billionaires, who overwhelmingly support republicans and anti-gay legislation.

Chick Fil A doing it openly is no worse, imho.

Most states in the US have no such laws. Many actually have provisions in their constitutions banning those laws. (For example, Ohio bans any “legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage.”)

How do we know you are really gay? Or like chicken?? :dubious:

My biggest problem with these types of boycotts is that in general they don’t effect the corporation much but can do harm to the francise owner. And do you know what his stance on the issue is?

But I’m not generally a boycotty type of guy.
