“Bones heal. Chicks dig scars. Pain is temporary. Glory is forever.” That’s the way I’ve always heard it. I can’t remember the commercial I saw this on- although it was likely an old Mountain Dew commercial, back when they first became The Official Soft Drink of the Suicidal Generation. It was quite a while back. According to the web, it’s attributed to Evel Knieval, Matt Hoffman, and a host of others. ---

You know those surfer/scuba divers they always have on Discovery channel shark episodes? I always look at the guy that invariably has a huge shark jaw mark on his stomach and back and think “that lucky SOB must get laid like a rock star.” ---

Well, I’m sporting a dandy one right now that I just picked up 2+ weeks ago. It starts at the top-front of my right ear, loops around under my earlobe, then heads south to almost the base of my neck. And the thrilling, Big Scar story? “Tumor. Surgery.” Hmmm. I can’t imagine anyone would find either the scar --think ‘Frankenstein’ – or the story, ummm, sexy. ---

I only have a couple visible scars… unfortunately most of my permanent injuries are internal (bad knees, destroyed hip-flexer, back & neck problems… lots of old sports injuries)… none of these “look impressive”, but I’ll suddenly start walking/moving funny when they act up… but my visible scars all have fun stories that most people I’ve met find fascinating… including most girls I have dated… I have a really pronounced scar above my eye that was the result of a bicycle accident… I was coasting down a hill on the way to lift, and suddenly a youth-group crested a lower hill… most of the youth-groupers moved to single file, one girl didn’t see me… so I’m sliding with both brakes locked and the front suspension fully collapsed (well, the front brake wasn’t locked, but damn close)… we finally made contact, and rather than just go through the girl, I took a header into the handle bars… that damn gear shift lever sliced my forehead wide open (a half-inch lower and I’d be wearing an eye patch right now)… so most people have said that I did a good thing by taking the injury myself, as opposed to just sailing through the girl… I have a nasty scar on my chin from a certan pool hall incident… we won’t go into that… and I don’t think anyone has seen that scar since I hit puberty and my goatee grew in… so we’ll just forget about that one… and I have a nasty (but thankfully fading scar) on the top of my skull… I was chopping wood for my dad, and the hathet handle shattered… the hatchet head flipped up in the air and came down just right… lots of blood… now that I have a shaved head, you can see it if you look, but atleast it’s pretty much gone… from what I’ve experienced… people see to be impressed by the facial scar since it was the result of me trying to not hurt a child… the pool hall scar is almost always met with “well, what did you expect”… and the hatchet scar is something like “well, accidents happen”… so it would seem that scars from self-sacrifice or self-defense are admired, while the rest are “well, crap happens” just my observations… (oh… and I have a number of scars elsewhere on my body… but most people don’t see those, so I don’t have any good stories to relay.) ---

Two nearly invisible scars over my knuckes, acqired while walking the dog. His leash tangles with another dog’s thin braided leather leash, he lunged, the thin leash rasped across my knuckes very quickly… So, any female dopers wanna make me feel all better? Anyone? Anyone at all? ---

I have some large obvious surgical scars on my abdomen. There’s a couple of ways I could slant the story. Which of these is best: _A surgical team sedated me, opened my abdominal cavity and removed several feet of bowel. I spent a number of weeks afterward recovering in the hospital._ Or _A gang of people knocked me out, sliced me open, and nearly disemboweled me!
