Children of the 70s . . . what do you remember from Sesame Street?

Speaking of, anyone else heard “Sesame’s Treat” by Smart E’s? Great techno song using the original Sesame Street song as the background sample, starting off with The Count “5…6…7…8! A-ah-ah-ah-ah!”

HAAAAH! That used to be my favorite part! Hardly anyone I’ve talked to remembers that!

That’s it. I mostly remember the little, fluffy one jumping up and down making that “gnack!” noises until the tall one comes along.

Another excellent surreal one were the Red and Blue googly-eyed aliens that were trying to communicate with a telephone.

“Cow. Cow. Yup-yup-yup-yup-yup!.. Moooooo! … Moooooo!”

No response from phone.

“Nope-nope-nope-nope…”

Phone rings. Aliens gets scared and hide behind their bottom lips. Before choosing to “communicate.”

“Yup-yup-yup-yup-yup! Rrrrrriiiiing! Drrrrrriiiiiing!”

And of course, who can forget:
"Heeeeeey, Froggy baaaaabyyyyyyyyyy!"
(Man, I love Grover. Hate that little Elmo.)

I remember James Taylor singing Jelly Man Kelly, a song he wrote for his daughter. And lots and lots of big stars did the show. I also remember a song—from a movie I think—about “You got to put down the duckie if you wanna play the saxophone.” Cameos with huge movie stars singing. Great stuff!

I’m a little older than you guys—I was watching with my son.

Heh. irkenDoom, I can’t get the ending theme song outta my head now:

*Dunnunt-dah-nuuuhhhhhhh
(ding dong dong ding)
(browmpa browmpa)
Dunnunt-dah-nuuuhhhhhhh
(ding dong dong ding)
(browmpa browmpa)

–HIGHER PITCH NOW–

Dunnunt-dah-nuuuhhhhhhh
(browmpa browmpa browmpa browm rowma rowma rowm) . . .*

Sniff Those were the days . . .

I can’t stop dancing at my desk.

Hey, remember when Stevie Wonder was on and there was that little kid (girl?) hanging onto the railing of a fire escape in the background and whipping her head around?

This is fun!

And hey–my Nana still maintains that watching Sesame Street with me taught her where peanuts come from!

Sorry. I get that song in my head all the time! It ROCKS! I used it as the ending theme for my demo reel when I graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. But I lost the copy, and I’m trying to find it.

Amen to that. Amen and amen again.

“And I am very. . . [whips cape over shoulder] CUTE, too!”

You are the coolest person EVVVAH! I’m not worthy.

I remember this long bit about the Cookie Monster as the engineer on a train carrying cookies which gets caught in a blizzard, and Cookie Monster is agonizing about whether or not he can resist eating the cookies, until he finally eats the snow blocking the track instead. I also remember taking that skit way too seriously as a kid.

The pinball song is burned into my neurons too. Curse my mental jukebox!

Jackpot.

Rubber Ducky, you’re the one
You make bath time lots of fun
Rubber Ducky, I’m awfully fond of you…

Ernie was the bomb!

Guy Smiley.

Roosevelt Franklin.

Professor Herbert Birdsfoot.

Those last two were only on for the first couple of seasons, I think.

Through, through, though!
He got that train through!
He ate up all the snow around…
‘It mighty tasty too!’

“You take the Golden AN…and you put it in the TAN VAN…take it to DAN…who’ll take it to FRAN.”

“Do you know what a square is?” “I know WHO a square is!”

Alphabet Chat. Remember the theme song? Voice 1: “A B C D E” Voice 2: “C D E F G” Harmony: “H I J K L M NNNN, O P”…

All of Prairie Dawn’s plays.

Harvey Kneeslapper. “Hey, want me to keep an eye on your hat?” “What?” “I said, want me to keep an EYE on your HAT?” “Certainly!” (Harvey crushes the hat with a big letter I and busts out laughing)

Painting on the glass.

The Twiddlebugs, who lived in a small milk carton in Ernie’s windowbox. Remember when they got a new picture for their wall (actually, a postage stamp) and tried to hang it up?

Kids losing a jack down a storm drain, so they tie a magnet to a string…

Man, I have so many memories. Any way to get all this great stuff on tape or DVD?

I THOUGHT once I got DirecTV and Noggin that I would finally be able to watch Electric Company and old Sesame Streets again. Sadly I’ve yet to see them show EC any longer, and all the Sesame Streets are the new crap will all the computer animation that won’t hold this old fart’s attention.

Stevie Wonder singing “1-2-3 Sesame Street” always freaked me out with that voice modulator he used.

Aw, man, the file I downloaded cuts out after 12 seconds. Does it work for you? I WILL find this song again!

Yeah, mine cuts out, too, but let me know if you find a longer version, because maybe I could play it as the last song at my wedding reception!

Max Carnage, a friend of mine said that they show old SS’s in, like, the WEE wee hours of the night. Of course, if you’re not up breastfeeding at that time, you might never catch them.

Not long ago, there was a segment of Little Richard doing this song. It was pretty cool. I’ve also seen REM, the Dixie Chicks, and (I think) Kiri Te Kanawa on.

IrkenDoom, check your e-mail.

Sesame Street: One of These Things (Is Not Like The Others)
words and music by Joe Raposo and Jon Stone
One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn’t belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?
Did you guess which thing was not like the others?
Did you guess which thing just doesn’t belong?
If you guessed this one is not like the others,
Then you’re absolutely…right!
Another version:
Three of these things belong together
Three of these things are kind of the same
Can you guess which one of these doesn’t belong here?
Now it’s time to play our game (time to play our game).
Bonus Version
Three of these kids belong together
Three of these kids are kind of the same
But one of these kids is doing his (her) own thing
Now it’s time to play our game
It’s time to play our game.
