Children taken at the Border When Parents are Charged with Misdemeanors

Happy Father’s Day, Everyone!

Ah, but Trump policy is zero tolerance ***implementation ***of this 10 year old program. This implementation was started with effectively a phone call, and trump could end it with a phone call. It’s part of his presidential powers.
Be honest and “own” it. You support ripping apart families and separating asylum seeking minors from their parents as a deterrent. Full stop. If you don’t, then support a single issue bill in Congress to change it.

Congress could fix this quickly by coming together with a bipartisan bill that Trump wouldn’t dare to veto.

Instead the congressmen and Senators prefer to grandstand in front of the press.

If they care about these kids, then quit talking and legislate.

Trump repealed DACA and challenged Congress to fix immigration.

They’ve done squat. This shame is on them.

No, this shame is on Trump for ordering a new policy in April. He is directly responsible. He ordered this, Jeff Sessions implemented it. Congress can fix this with a veto proof bill, but this is not a “ball is in your court” situation. Trump wasn’t forced do this because DACA/immigration reform. Trump did this of his own volition because he wasn’t getting what he wanted.

That’s actually not true. The Congress did reach a compromise bill, which Trump threatened to veto if Democrats didn’t give him 100% of what he wanted. This appalling, cruel mess is completely on Stephen Miller, John Kelly and all the rest of the Trumpists who do this in the name of border security and then cravenly hide behind a false skirt of blaming the Dems for not going along with their crap.

Trump Immigration Veto Threat

Or trump could sign an executive order to unfuck the enforcement crisis that he created.
Be proud and own it, but don’t blame “democrats” or “the law” or “congress” for that which trump decided on his own self to have enforced. It’s on trump and he could reverse it tomorrow if he wanted.

You own it or just going to keep blaming the un trump?

Congress can create a permanent solution with legislation.

Anything Trump does is temporary. It’s just kicking the can down the road. A mess for someone else to untangle.

Presidents have been doing that for too long. The problem is getting bigger and more complex. It’s time to legislate immigration reform. No more half assed solutions.

Got it. You won’t own it. Mighty Christian of ya.

Sure, a congressional solution would be great. In the meantime, trump can solve it with a phone call instead of holding refugee minors hostage. Sleep well

When a female AMERICAN criminal, or for that matter a non-AMERICAN female criminal who is imprisoned in the US, gives birth, is the child removed from her right then and there?

In other countries, there are children who live in prison with their mothers. Low security prisons, very small children, but it’s considered more humane than grabbing a suckling away. Children aren’t separated from their mothers unless the child is at least of kindergarten age, and the parents always know where the children are.

Would vetoing the bill get Trump’s ass kissed by anybody? Would it get Ivanka a sales order from China?

Then betcherass he would veto it.

The tent city where the children* are being housed is in Tornillo, Tx. The temperature forecast for tomorrow is a high of 102f. Beto O’Rourke was there leading a protest on Sunday.

*I’ve heard conflicting information. Are only the boys being kept here? If so, where are the girls??

Let’s put the blame where it belongs: on the illegal immigrants who ILLEGALLY enter our country, bringing their young children with them. If they did not commit these illegal acts, this would not be an issue. The USA has a right to pass immigration laws and enforce them. Illegal aliens should learn to respect the laws of the country that they are invading, or be prepared to accept the consequences, for themselves and their offspring. Shame on them, not on us.

Thanks for playing. It’s not illegal to come to the US and claim asylum.

So what misdemeanor are the 91% of parents from the OP being charged with?

There’s a big difference between “asylum” and “I’m tired of my shithole country and would rather suck off the teat of the American taxpayer.”

Those people want to BE the American taxpayer, you… damnit not the Pit.

If that were true, then why aren’t they following the LEGAL immigration procedures? Like my ancestors did. Sorry, does not compute.

Did your ancestors even have barriers to immigration? My ancestors to Spain didn’t, not a single one of them.

First, the people asking for asylum are following what, from the information they had, was a legal procedure. The procedure has been changed on them in what, in terms of people who can be practically incomunicado for the time of the trip, is a flash.
And second, paying taxes does not require one to be in a country legally, or permanently. Visitors pay taxes, illegal residents pay taxes. Illegal residents (or even legal ones who are not nationals) are a lot less likely to file for due returns or benefits to which they are entitled. I was enormously surprised to be told I had been entitled to food stamps; I thought, as a foreigner, I wasn’t, so I hadn’t even considered asking for them.

I read that as the border patrol reporting how that was supposed to be prosecuted. Of course Trump and others are even denying what is taking place or not owning the change of policy to make the misdemeanor into a bigger crime.

As pointed in other threads, a lot of what is going on is by design or wilful mismanagement of the current Trump administration. Hard to follow the law when there is no proper funding to process asylum seekers or refugees. Causing or encouraging border agents to ignore requests for asylum as the law allows.

Sure. Let’s put the blame on the parents. Fine. But how do you justify harming someone, particularly a child, for a crime* that somebody else has committed, even a parent?

If your father had committed a crime when you were a kid, would it have been right to lock you up?

An analogy: My neighbor’s kid uproots my tomatoes. That is both wrong and illegal. I can sue the neighbor for the value of the tomato plants, but that might not be effective and might take a long time to see results.

If I want to deter the kid, I could just attack him: I’m bigger and stronger, and I’m sure I could at least scare the shit out of him. BUT THAT WOULD BE WRONG. It would make me a worse person than my neighbor and his unruly brat.

And that’s without even going into the abuser’s “don’t make me hit you!” playbook.

*for the sake of argument.
