This from Wikipedia: "NASA was established on July 29, 1958, by the National Aeronautics and Space Act. Project Mercury, initiated in 1958, started NASA down the path of human space exploration with missions designed to discover simply if man could survive in space." So, you’re right; but only by a few months! ---

Sputnik was 1957; the idea of people – real people – in space wasn’t something that would have penetrated the popular consciousness of the elementary school set in 1958. ---
