I express no opinion on the muumuu issue. I have already made clear my thought that gloworm’s actions were highly inappropriate and deserving of criticism. That said… I absolutely reject the idea that posters here should be judged by age. Dismissing anyone’s position with, “You’re just a kid and don’t know any better,” is, obviously, an _ad hominem_ attack. Undoubtedly harsh language appears on these pages. But people of all ages may read it. I rather suspect that people of all ages may encounter it in school. I am not persuaded that reading it here is particularly damaging. Crick - you are absolutely right, of course, when you suggest that children don’t have civil rights in the same way that adults do. I am not suggesting that this poster’s ‘rights’ should drive our approach. When ideas are subjected to adversarial testing, they either fail or stand or their strength. No proposition, dismissed because of the age of the posting it, can fairly be tested. So it’s not for the kids’ rights that I speak, but rather for this board’s presumed commitment to discovering the truth, and to stamping out ignorance. In short, we fail in our own mission when we blithely dismiss a point because of the age of the poster thereof. - Rick ---

I have to agree with Mrunner in his point that a lot of people here are uptight and tend to gang up on others. I think the “mob mentality” has driven a number of posters away (who probably deserved better treatment). One of the things that appeals to me about his board is that it’s visited by people of all ages, races, experiences, education levels and backgrounds. Isn’t getting people like this in one spot the way to stamp out ignorance? I have no reason to apologise, I disagreed with the op, this is the pit, I flamed him. That _is_ still what we do here right? I mean he opens a thread like this to defend the actions of a poster who most of us want drawn and quartered, and now I have to be nice because he is a good kid who contributed on other threads? If any other poster had made this OP, I would have said the same thing, my response to the op had nothing to do with age. Look, I havnt seen him around, and if all you guys say he is witty and articulate, great, wonderful, WELCOME!! but dont flame me if I say it makes me uncomfortable to engage in a flame war with an 8th grader. I wont apologise for how I feel, and I feel UNCOMFORTABLE talking openly with a 14 yr old kid in the room. He might be smarter, more mature, wittier taller, better looking than me, all of that, but the fact remains that he is very,very young. I really dont know what to say here. I am against censorship, I enjoy the exchange of ideas, all that, I dont think this place should necessarily have an age limit, but how young is too young to read stuff on this board? Especially here in the pit, do we want 10 year olds reading the thread about Demo and Flyp? Maybe this mrunner is very mature for his age…I dont know. Its not up to me what he does anyway. OK, I APOLOGISE! I am truly sorry I replied to this thread in any way. I am so so sorry I swore at a 14 year old. I am sorry if I gave the impression that this board is for 30-somethings. Back in the days of the SDMB on AOL, we only chased off the idiots who weren’t there to learn, but just to disrupt the board. Age, race, experiences, backgrounds, etc. weren’t a factor in participation, but instead offered a wide perspective to a large variety of topics. I think it is sad that this board has deteriorated to the point that a small cliché (you know who you are) are under the impression that some sort of initiation must be passed before a newby is allowed into their tight little group or on the board for that matter. Sorry for the delay in this; real life interfered and I was off the board for a few days. Mrunner, I gave one of the snottier responses to your muumuu question. Violating all rules about not cluttering up apologies with excuses, your topic didn’t give any explanation for a highly unusual request and (this is the biggee) it coincided with a lot of stupid misbehavior here on the board. Turns out you gave an excellent background for your question that cleared up the misconception that you were trolling. But no way around it, I jumped to false conclusion that you were part of the “pest infestation” and I owe you an apology for that. You’re bright, articulate and age doesn’t matter. Crick and Watson, you don’t deserve that name. Those two men were bright, inventive and most importantly, very open minded. They made one of the most profound discoveries science has ever had and you should be ashamed to even think of taking their names on. For another thing, you should do your homework before you fly off on a stint. I am not a “kid”. I happen to be nearly 21 years old. I am a full adult, but obviously you think anyone that could defend a ‘kid’s’ rights to think how they want to must be a ‘kid’ herself. Grow up and get your head out of your ass. I do believe that Mrunner should be able to post to everyone and speak and think how he wants to. You and kelli are not the mind, thought and morals police for the entire world. You must have been really immature as a child, because you can’t possibly understand how insulting it is to be thought naive and in need of protection from the world simply because you are young. It’s absolutely ridiculous. People of all ages are capable of understanding and speaking on different things. Hell, in other countries these so called ‘kids’ are running the entire damn country. And you’re going to say that someone their same age in the US should be kept in the dark about the world? Yes, go ahead, breed ignorance. Never level with these ‘kids’ and let them fall into traps of peer pressure and let them be lured in the wrong things by any manner of ways. Don’t explain the topics on his board to your children and let them go out and discover it all for themselves. Be a lazy parent, if you are or when you become one.
