The point is that in principle this is a highly efficient way of creating antimatter. Electron-positron pairs are fairly lightweight examples, but if you could get the energy density high enough you could get proton-antiproton pairs. Not counting the efficiency of the lasers themselves or of ancillary systems, being able to convert 1% or more of the energy used into antiprotons would take bulk antimatter production out of the realm of science fiction. ---

I think we would all agree this needs to happen. ---
