“Chittering” is what the subtitles for _Alien: Earth_ and _The Watchers_ call the scary monster sounds that are kind of a cross between a creaking door and a really slow frog’s croak. When and where was it decided this was the sound fictional reptilian/insectoid creatures would make? And is there anything in actual nature that sounds like that. Here’s a sample from _Predator_ [![](https://img.youtube.com/vi/I88lWD_hw5Y/maxresdefault.jpg "Predator Sound Effect") ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I88lWD_hw5Y) ---

Doesn’t answer your question, but you might find it fascinating (I sure did): [![](https://img.youtube.com/vi/gpjhI-eRE6c/maxresdefault.jpg "Voice of Optimus Prime is also The Predator (vocalizations by Peter Cullen)") ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpjhI-eRE6c) ---
