How is it silly noticing things? Should I bring a bag with me next time to put over my head while waiting for the food to come?

> Nope. Milk is one of the things you can drink if you’ve got an ulcer, and milk is also a good antidote to chilli. So what’s the problem with flavouring it?

There’s nothing wrong with flavoring it. It just doesn’t pair well with anything.

On a slightly unrelated note, I’m drinking vanilla almond milk right now!

> It’s not ordering chocolate milk that’s childish. I agree the guy gets bonus cool point for bucking the trend. What’s childish is having so little refinement in your palate that you’d actually _want_ to order chocolate milk. That’s minus a million cool points, so it’s a net loss.
>
> Whoever tried to make the counterpoint that toast is also childish, that was a retarded fail. Ordering a chocolate milk is like ordering a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on white bread with the crusts cut off. Nothing wrong with ordering it; it’s the _wanting_ it that’s a sign of arrested development. Of course adults are “allowed” to be in a state of arrested development, but it’s hardly something worthy of praise.

> If you don’t care about being childish – not looking childish in a restaurant, but actually _being_ childish – go nuts with the chocolate milk. (Arguing that coffee is gross isn’t exactly helping the cause, btw.)

Wait a minute, did you really just illustrate your snooty point about people with unrefined tastes by quoting _Friends_?

The irony is almost delicious as sweet chocolate milk.

I have a glass of chocolate soy milk every morning for breakfast. I want to drink soy milk, but regular soy milk tastes like ass, so I have chocolate (Silk brand only - the other brands also taste like ass). Would I order chocolate milk in a restaurant? No, but only because drinks in restaurants are madly overpriced - I usually drink water.

Right, exactly. Thank you for posting this chestnut that never fails to appear in threads like this.

I’m not sure dopers actually understand this quote. Anyone citing it as a defense, or who are defensive in any way in this thread, are exactly the people c.s. lewis refered to as childish.

Again, adults are perfectly free to be childish. If you’re defending your desires in this thread as being valid, you must be feeling some of that inner childishness lewis wrote of. Because a true adult (in his words) put away the fear of being thought childish. Meaning it wouldn’t even occur to them to defend their childish practices. I expect the adult response to a claim that your behavior is childish (eg: ordering chocolate milk) would be along the lines of “You’re darn tootin’!” You know, joyfully embracing the simpler pleasures.

If you have to point out how “sophistocated” you are, then you really aren’t.
(In fact, when I DO order said chocolate milk, I’m going to ask for a bendy straw. And blow bubbles in the milk! HA!)

😃
Seriously, life’s too short to worry about what people think about what I’m eating. Dude, just eat what you want.

Hmm, contrast this Ellis Dee with this one:

> [@Ellis Dee](#):
>
> What’s childish is having so little refinement in your palate that you’d actually want to order chocolate milk. That’s minus a million cool points, so it’s a net loss.
> …
> Then you have childish tastes. There is no law requiring adults to be sophisticated. It’s certainly not something to take pride in

People aren’t getting defensive because you’re calling them childish: they’re getting defensive because you’re telling them that that’s minus a million cool points and is nothing to be proud of. They’re defensive because of the insults.

And people are also a little bewildered, I’m sure. Some things are childish, sure: laughing at farts, or playing hide-and-seek, or snuggling with teddy bears. But chocolate milk? Why on earth is drinking chocolate milk any more childish than drinking Coke, or eating grilled cheese with American cheese slices, or dipping fries in ketchup? Each of these is an indulgence in a comfort food with a relatively simple taste profile, but engaging in such an indulgence is a pretty common part of adulthood.

Nesquik is the same the world over, as far as I can tell. And I can assure you that Galaxy tastes much better with milk (as we’d been making it before reading the can) than with water.

There’s a dairy I know that sells great organic milk, in glass bottles. I like them mainly for their non-UHT half-and-half, as I’m not much of a milk drinker regardless of flavors. But they do produce chocolate milk, which is distinguished by being, besides organic, whole (not lowfat) and _dark_. It’s less sweet than a typical chocolate milk and has a more complex flavor profile. My kids like it a lot.

I live in NYC and we can’t get chocolate milk here anymore – at least not _whole_ chocolate milk. All we can get here is 2%, 1% and non-fat chocolate milk. ☹ It’s like drinking chocolate-flavored water.

Maybe there’s some law against it; I don’t know.

Absolutely. Instant hot cocoa has powdered milk in it and tastes fine with water, but Nesquik and the like is meant to be added to milk.

Nah, probably just a lack of demand, relatively speaking. (Disclosure: I used to have a dairy group as a client.)

1. Sales of whole milk in general have declined for years, as consumers have switched to lower-fat varieties. Most of the milk sold in the U.S. now is some sort of reduced-fat version.

2. Pre-made flavored milk in general isn’t a big seller, compared to white milk. It tends to be pretty expensive, and most consumers see it as a luxury item (whereas white milk is a “staple good” for most people).

3. Flavored milk is disliked by some people – not because it’s “childish”, but because they see it as adding nothing but sugar to something that’s supposed to be healthy. They give grief to dairies for marketing flavored milk. One tact that many dairies use to try to blunt that issue is by only marketing flavored milk in the lower-fat varieties.

I went to college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which (as you might expect) has a big dairy program. The cafeterias featured dairy products made on campus, including chocolate milk, made with whole milk. It was delicious (and inexpensive, since it was produced on campus), but _man_, it was rich, like drinking melted chocolate ice cream.

Great songwriters get cravings for [chocolate milk](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt2C2onUU5Q&feature=fvsr). Used to drink loads of chocolate soya milk as someone else pointed out straight soya milk is disgusting, with chocolate it is not.

Plus I do not give a fuck what people want to drink, you could order a pint of piss for all I care 🙂

I buy a half-gallon of chocolate milk at the store every week, I love the stuff. I would never order it in the restaurant, though…I’ve already got it in my fridge. I can just wait until I get home.
