Ew. I didn’t think I’d have anything to contribute to this thread, as I love Christmas songs. But that is horrible, and it has nothing to do with the lyrics. There is absolutely no reverb on the guy’s voice–not even the natural kind. He needs to fire whoever mixed that.

I can’t stand “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” or anything past the first little bit of “Jingle Bell Rock”. They sound like something someone’s lame parents from the 50s would put on to get some Christmas spirit into those awful, sinful greasers.

I also hate the “punk” versions of Christmas carols that show up in at least one Christmas special every year. I like punk, and I like most Christmas carols. But this feeble attempt to seem “edgy” and “hip” needs to stop.

I am not sure if this qualifies as a song or not, but the version of jingle bells done with the sound of dogs barking. The “creator” of that song should be made into dog food.

Totally agree. I hate 'em all. Or, nearly all.

I still like Tchaikovsky’s _Nutcracker_, but that’s not a song, strictly speaking. I also still like Handel’s _Messiah_ (which was written for Easter) and Bach’s _Christmas Oratorio_. Also not “songs,” but whatever.

Leroy Anderson’s _Sleigh Ride_ I can marginally tolerate.

But all of the pop-Christmas standards, I can’t stand any of them.

Really? The religious ones are usually my favourites. Of course, this is coming from someone who generally likes Christmas music.

Has Tiny Tim’s unclever, unfunny attempt at being topical, “Santa Claus Has Got the AIDS This Year,” been sufficiently suppressed on grounds of good taste to have escaped the notice of 'most everyone?

When it comes to xmas music less is more. I used to like the Vince Guaraldi pieces–all of them. For some reason this year I’ve heard “Christmastime Is Here” by at least three artists. It seems to be playing in every retail outlet I’ve in in the last week, and frankly, it drove me right out.

I have hated “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” since the first time I heard it. Once would have been more than enough. I do appreciate that there are people who believe this, though.

The real short list is the xmas songs I actually like. Let’s see. “Joy to the World,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Oh Come Oh Come Emanuel” and I’m not even remotely religious. I also kind of like “We Three Kings,” particularly the verse that goes, “Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume, breathes a life of gathering gloom, sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in a stone cold tomb.” Cheery! (Probably I like it because I rarely hear that verse, wonder why not?)

I loathe Christian music. My mom used to force me to listen to it when I was growing up, while she was shoving religion down my throat daily. I pretty much violently reject anything Christian-related these days–it’s just an involuntary revulsion.

Oh, I can’t stand Roy Orbison! Just his NAME triggers a memory of him warbling in his “falsetto” voice, “It’s OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.”

This song, though, works beautifully in a [back-to-school Staples ad](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPIIMbG9R4w). Love the deadpan expressions on the faces of the kids.

Fair enough. I think a lot of people would have that reaction.

It’s one thing when they only sing the first verse (hey, lots of songs only get their first verse sung), but what really bugs me is when they sing the gold and frankincense verses, and still skip the myrrh. Yeah, that guy whose birth we’re celebrating now is the same guy whose crucifixion we’ll be commemorating in a few months. We shouldn’t try to gloss over that.

I’m certainly one of them, excluding religious that are broadly considered “Classical.”

I agree here. Things like Handel’s Messiah don’t bother me and I find parts of them quite beautiful. But when I hear songs about Jesus and all that, I either find a way to immediately make it stop! make it stop! or I leave the area so that I can’t hear it. I dislike it even more than country music!

> I heard Bony M, Mary’s Boy Child, years ago trapped in a traffic jam outside the mall and it was one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard. I never forgot it and thanks to the internet also many years later I found out who sang it.

Harry Belefonte was the first to record “Mary’s Boy Child”. Of all the versions I’ve heard (and I know I haven’t come close to hearing them all), I can only stomach his version’s and Boney M’s, and I can only deal with the Boney M one a couple of times each year.

I can also do without the Little Drummer Boy. Is there anything about that song that makes the least bit of sense?
