I read this ages ago, but reread some of it more recently. Yes, his political memoirs are somewhat self-serving. The world, certainly Great Britain, nevertheless owes a great deal to his resolve, efficacy and efforts. Such a global war cannot be well summarized by any individual. His involvement was significant and substantial. While I like his writing quite a bit, there are much better historians and much more comprehensive histories. One takes political memoirs and war stories with ample salt. One easily forgets the unknown peril that existed and the genuine wickedness and brutality that was subdued. His mission and not his memoirs were the reason he was lionized.
“For my part, I consider that it will be found much better by all Parties to leave the past to history, especially as I propose to write that history myself.”
Winston Churchill,
23 January 1948.
