My guess: Because as the weapons inspectors continued to be led on [more wild goose chases by U.S. intelligence](http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/01/18/iraq/main537096.shtml) and had begun to realize that what the U.S. was taking as intelligence was actually fairytales dreamed up by Chalabi and his defector friends…[or more intriguingly perhaps by Iranian intelligence](http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2001935950_iranchalabi22.html)…the justification for the war was beginning to implode. They had to act quickly.
