CIA: "When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout"

Guess it’s easier to complain.

It listed Bali as a possible site. Among how many others??

Yeah, it’s not that the CIA and FBI don’t get warnings. They get them constantly, 24/7. More than they can investigate. Almost all of them worthless and bogus. A few of them are for real. And of those, how many are actually carried out?

The trick is to figure out which ones to pay attention to.

“When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout”

Where is that a quote from? Sounds familar (and funny!)

What the hell do you want them to do? It’s not a fucking game where you waggle your fingers at the CIA and say “nyaah nyaah nyaah, you get points off for not telling us the brand of fertilizer the bombers used”. Nonetheless, the warnings they gave in Jakarta were specific enough to save lives, and went so far as to include a tourist spot that heretofore had always been considered sort of a safe haven (i.e., Bali).

If an American citizen in Indonesia had paid attention to the embassy’s warnings to “Americans and other Westerners to ‘avoid large gatherings and locations known to cater primarily to a Western clientele, such as certain bars, restaurants and tourist areas’”, then a life might have been saved. If the Indonesians had gotten off their asses and admitted they had a terrorism problem, as the US was trying to pound into their heads up to that point, then the Bali attack might have been prevented in the first place.

The federal government is not supposed to be your mommy, constantly hovering over your individual shoulder poised to chase the monsters away. Instead of whining [snivel]And this is helpful to us how, again, exactly?[/snivel] realize that most of the job of protecting your personal safety comes down to you yourself, and maybe give a nod of appreciation to the folks who are trying to give you guidelines on how to do that.
