one wonders where all this concern for decorum and proper behavior in the hallowed halls of Congress were when Cheany spit out that “fuck you” a while back.
It was all over the news. Are you kidding? That got hammered for a lot longer than this will.
so, she’s at this rally, wearing appropriate attire for it, at the last minute gets an invite somewhere else - and this made her a butthead 'cause she was wearing a tshirt?
really? I don’t recall Cheany being censured by Congress, nor being escorted from the halls in handcuffs, nor facing criminal charges. And IIRC there was no shortage of pundits suggesting that 'twas no big deal, he’s a man’s man after all.
No, because she took off her outershirt to display the t-shirt.
And so it is with this. There’s no shortage of apologists for Cindy Sheehan, as evidenced by this thread.
Should Cheney have gotten his hand slapped like she did? Absolutely.
Gasp she wore a tshirt, the horrors! she took off her coat
We’ll just have to agree to disagree.
Cheney didn’t. not even close. that’s the point Airman. I don’t buy the whole ‘hallowed halls’ arguement for that very reason. Certainly it would/should be considered more disruptive for one elected official to say “fuck you” to another inside the chambers than for a member of the public to quietly wear a shirt they’d worn eariler that day that merely pointed out a fact (albiet one that the administration would rather folks not focus on).
Why not? Were lives at stake? Was the President performing brain surgery? Could the President even see those T-shirts from his podium? In what way did those T-shirts disrupt the speech or prevent the Prez from talking?
Does the ist Amendment specify a time and place for when you can wear a T-shirt that the Presoident doesn’t like?
I think it’s an outrage that either of these women were arrested.
Yep, moment’s up.
I think I could wear the exact same t-shirt today and not be arrested. The difference? I’m not wearing it in the gallery of the SOTU Address, mebbe?
How about if I didn’t wear a shirt at all during the SOTU? Reckon I’d be arrested with no slogan? Would that be disruptive?
on what? if she’d been wearing the tshirt earlier that day? if she was taking off a coat (which is appropriate indoors).
If you look at this picture that was taken earlier in the day, I’d have to say that ‘outershirt’ is a ‘jacket’. How DARE she take her jacket off indoors!
I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the only thing she ever wears. Updated, of course, to accurately reflect the death toll of the day.
This is bullshit. Defending the principle of free speech does not equal an endorsement of the speech itself or an apology for the invidual.
Show me where the Constitution says that makes a difference.
How is this analogous?
An amusing quote from Congressman Young about his wife:
[quote=“She has a real passion for our troops, and she shows it in many, many ways,” Young said.[/quote]
[Insert joke HERE]
Ask the Capitol Police. I’m certain they wouldn’t arrest me if I wore the same shirt Sheehan did if I was say, walking down Pennsylvania Avenue.
Maybe it’s a dress code issue? Seems like another lady wearing a t-shirt had a run of bad luck in that same venue.
If you are not properly dressed for the event, it would appear that you don’t get to hang around too long. I’ll wager a night in jail that I could go shirtless at the next SOTU and make no political remarks at all, and I would not be allowed to stay. I’ll go even further, I bet the same night in jail that a plain white t-shirt would be enough to get me booted. You can’t even get into a nice nightclub with a plain white t-shirt, it wouldn’t surprise me if the same held true at the SOTU.
As DtC said, it isn’t about her. As I stated earlier, I think she’s a goof, a one-trick pony. But even the case law supports her.
As for those who suggested she go shirtless, might I just say this. Ick. I’d rather see Dick Cheney shirtless, at least he’d have some interesting scars.
Could somebody who’s siding with the jack booted government thugs in this case please, PLEASE cite the LAW that Cindy was violating? Case and code number please, with a link.
