And Baltimore lost two NFL teams called the Colts.
The original Colts from the AAFC played one season in the NFL before being dissolved. Two years later, Carroll Rosenblum bought the franchise that had been in Dallas and revived the Colts name.
Rosenblum actually traded the Colts franchise to Robert Irsay for the Rams franchise. That paved the way (12 years later) for Irsay’s move to Indianapolis.
Baltimore also lost two NBA franchises called the Bullets.
In turn, the Pilots’ move to Milwaukee was to mollify disgruntled and possibly litigious Milwaukeans (including Selig) upset about the Braves’ move to Atlanta in the mid-1960s.
Baltimore also lost the Orioles twice or three times.
The Orioles were in the then major American Association from the beginning in 1882. They dropped out for the 1890 season, but rejoined in mid-season to replace Brooklyn.
The American Association folded in 1892 and Baltimore then joined the National League. But the NL ousted them after 1899 along with Cleveland, Washington and Louisville. That was a bit unfair as they’d finished 4th with the other three finishing 9th 11th and 12th. They’d also finished first 3 times and second twice in the previous 5 years.
A new Orioles team was a charter member of the 1901 American League. After two seasons that team moved to New York and became the Yankees.
NBA-Philadelphia lost the Warriors to San Francisco, then took the Syracuse Nationals and renamed them the Philadelphia 76ers
Soccer-Philadelphia Fury (NASL) move to Montreal to become the Manic in 1980…Philadelphia Fever (MISL) move to Los Angeles to become the Lazers in 1982. Two other NASL teams, the Philadelphia Spartans and Atoms went toes up.
Pro Football- Philadelphia Stars (USFL) become the Baltimore Stars in 1985?. The Philadelphia Eagles almost moved to Phoenix in 1983 when owner Leonard Toes lost $2 million playing blackjack and was forced to sell the team.
Hockey- Philadelphia Blazers (WHA) move to Vancouver in 1973. One NHL team the Quakers went toes up in the 1930s after one season.
Lacrosse- Philadelphia Wings become the New England Black Wolves playing at the Mohegan Sun casino in 2014
World Team Tennis- Philadelphia Freedoms become Boston Lobsters in 1975
