Try listening to someone not from Illinois, especially people from the south (no prejudice inherent… I’m speaking from years and years of living-in-the-south experience) try to pronounce Illinoisan/s

Ill-uh-noise-an.

It makes me cringe every single time.

In my experience, no one even uses these. People in the Northeast just use New Englander. (They do use Bostonian though.)

I once heard a very lame comedian on a day cruise out of Miami asking people where they were from.

Some folks were from Tampa.

“Tampons, huh? Looks like we got a whole box here!”

I’ve lived in Connecticut for nearly four years, and never heard that term. People generally use the term “Nutmegger.”

Here’s what the [official state website](http://www.ct.gov/ctportal/cwp/view.asp?a=843&q=246458) has to say:

> [@](#):

> There are several nicknames for persons from Connecticut, even though none is “official”:
>
> According to Webster’s New International Dictionary, 1993, a person who is a native or resident of Connecticut is a “Connecticuter”. There are numerous other terms in print, but not in use, such as: “Connecticotian” - Cotton Mather in 1702. “Connecticutensian” - Samuel Peters in 1781. “Nutmegger” is sometimes used. It is derived from the nickname, the Nutmeg State, based on the practice of the Connecticut peddlers who traveled about selling nutmegs.

Here’s a whole list for names of U.S. state residents:

The correct pronunciation is ill-ih-noi-an. The state is pronounced ill-ih-noi. Pronouncing the state name Ill-ih-noise is wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. It is my single biggest pet peeve.

While Baltimorean is the generally-accepted term for people from Baltimore, i prefer “Baltimoron.” 🙂

I’ve noticed that at some point in my state’s history, we became “Texans.” However, in some old documents, I’ve seen references to the people of this part of the world being called “Tex **i** ans.” What’s the deal with that? Any other examples of origin-groupname changes like this?

The term “Texican” was also used. I did some searching and only found that the term “Texan” was generally used following annexation in 1845. No reason given for the change.

Cites:

My WAG is that “Texan” is easier to say, with fewer syllables.

While most people in Newcastle (North East England) would describe themselves as Geordies, or Tynesiders, the more precise term would be Novocastrians (which I’ve always kind of liked).

Here are some I’ve often wondered about: What do the people from **Truth or Consequences** , New Mexico call themselves? Would it be “Truth or Consequencians?” Or **Newport News** , Virginia? Are they “Newport Newsians?” Or **Twenty-Nine Palms** , California-- “Twenty-Niners”, “Twenty-Nine Palmers?”
