Hmmmm, perhaps I was thinking of Axel Rose. And, as Mangetout says above, in a non-sexual way. I sincerely hope.
It’s from the Latin camurus, curved. Used also in Australia to refer to road shape, although I would use the word to refer also to the levelling off that occurs at an intersection to facilitate tight cornering.
Cambering is pretty important for road design and expecting it seems very ingrained into driving instincts. One of our roads is used as a Grand Prix track, and it’s very disconcerting to drive along it the opposite way. The fact that there have been heaps of accidents on it is probably due to the imitative hoon factor though.
I’m afraid, London Calling, that it’s Axl Rose. Otherwise his name wouldn’t be an anagram for “oral sex”. So much for non-sexual.
Damn you picmr, Sir ! You’ve undone me – in a non-sexual way, of course
Well the funny thing is, I did check it. Google comes up with over 44,200 hits with the extra ‘e’ and 32,300 without. I know the ‘story’ but I guess I’m just a popularist.
The gutters are supposed to sloped down to the corners, but over the years the middle may sag or sink. In all the years I’ve been walking to work, I’ve seen a number of times where city crews were replacing gutters where too much water had been pooling.
