Thank you. I’ll be here till Thursday. Try the paté.

The logical progression here is one of another horrific bloodbath, where Johnny Mrrikka with his crossed bandoliers of hollow-point rounds and his AR-15 standing guard over a Recruiting Station decides ( because these guys are, in their minds, judge jury and fulminating executioner ) that someone entering the station doesn’t look “right”.

And kills them.

She’s dodging the fact that her only military experience is as a spouse. Normally I don’t have a problem with her, but she’s behaving like a typical fucking dependa here and it’s nauseating.

There are so many things I can say about this now, directed at her of course, and none of them nice, not even close to nice. You’re right. It’s downright disgusting.

She’s a fucking SPOUSE?!?!? And she’s talking smack like that? Does her husband know? I ask because he might be embarrassed by her.

Okay, we need something like Stolen Valor to group these people. Maybe call it Reflected Glory.

As noted earlier and often, I was never a member of any nation’s armed forces. I could be called an Air Force Brat, but by the time I came along Dad was in the reserves JAG and once a year he would spend some time bailing airmen out of the drunk tank. Just want to be clear that, although I admire my father for his service, I hope I have never given the impression I catch any reflection of that glory. And I do not admire my father’s reasoning when he retired; quitting in a baby snit because they wouldn’t make him a light colonel because he spent the last decade or so of his career mostly bailing airmen out of the drunk tank. He really wanted the extra money and to catch up with his brother, though his brother spent his career doing spook stuff, then retired into private industry doing spook stuff for the USAF, except with private sector pay and full retirement.

There’s already a term: “Wearing the sponsor’s rank”.

Speaking of spouses, what the hey. Here’s my favorite “dual military spouse” story. Quick Navy “shorthand” lesson: When someone gets promoted to Chief Petty Officer, their rate/rating abbreviation ends with a C. For example, a Boatswain’s Mate (BM) gets listed as BMC when advanced to E-7. This is usually spelled out loud when speaking to or about the BMC: “Bee-Em-See”.

I was a PN1 (E-6) at the time of this particular story. One Seaman (E-2) from our base came into the PSD’s disbursing section with his Army soldier wife. They were trying to get an allowance early, said allowance illegal to pay in advance. The Army half of the couple was getting verbally abusive to the Disbursing Clerk Seaman (DKSN). The DKSN called me and when I walked into the room, the female soldier was saying, "Listen. I’m giving you an order. Do you see this? (holding her ID card with her finger over the pay grade but ensuring the DKSN could see the rank abbreviation; she’d obviously pulled this stunt before) “It says Ess-Pee-See. I’m the same rank as a Navy Chief Petty Officer. Do what I’m telling you.” At that point, I interrupted and said, “That’s an interesting theory. What company are you assigned to? I need to call your First Sergeant.” She tried that “I’m an SPC Chief” BS on me and I then asked her if she could read a ribbon rack, pointing to mine. Her face fell when she saw half of my awards at the time were Army awards. I called the First Sergeant, gave him the whole story, and he told me, “Petty Officer, please order that \*\*\*\* to stay right where she is. I’m sending someone over right now to pick her up. Thanks for the alert.”

For those who don’t know, an Army SPC is an E-4. Sadly, I never did find out what the 1SG (E-8) said to her.

* * *

More fun was to be had when dual military members wanted one spouse to have a DD 1173 (Dependent ID Card) so the E-6 or below spouse could get membership in the Chief Petty Officer’s Club. Nope. Sorry. Not permitted.

* * *

My mother had a good one, too. Mom is a spouse, never having served in the military herself. This happened when Dad was stationed at Fort Benning. Mom and another lady were standing in line at the Commissary when some young spouse came in and cut in front of them, telling everyone in earshot, “I’m Lieutenant so-and-so’s wife and I’m in a hurry.” The lady with Mom said, “Well, that’s very interesting. Get to the back of the line and wait your turn.” The young lady repeated her bit about who she is. The lady with Mom looked at the young woman, said, “Don’t you dare move from this spot, I’m getting the manager” and then looked at the cashier. The cashier said, “No problem, Ma’am. I’ll be happy to wait a moment.” The manager arrived and the young woman went into her litany again. The manager’s response was the best: “Yes, I understand. I’m glad to hear that. But, I have just one question for you. Can you explain to me why a lieutenant’s wife gets priority in the Commissary over the base commanding general’s wife?” By the way, I’m so proud of my mother; she never ever “wore her sponsor’s rank”. Mom’s cool.

Oh, and aruvqan: I’ve had zero interaction, happily, with you before this thread. You’re a complete tool. You’re also a hypocrite. Last night, I did a quick search for your posts with the word _dependent_ in them. I found one where you said that you’re just a dependent so you cannot say anything about combat personnel. Do yourself a favor: shut the fuck up. Intelligent people are talking. That’s another group for which you do not qualify.

Clarification of Post #186: Dad was stationed at Fort Benning as a battalion commander and was a lieutenant colonel at the time. The lady with my mom at the commissary was the commanding general’s wife.

Regarding that story, do Army personnel actually get to order around people from other services who are not actually assigned to their commands, just because they outrank them? That seems odd.

</div>

There’s general military authority and there’s positional authority. Regarding the SPC: she doesn’t get to issue orders because she is not a non-commissioned officer so no general military authority. If she did have it, say she was an NCO, then she could give certain orders, but definitely not order someone not beneath her in her chain of command to do something relating to their position, say disburse government funds. At the time, I had both general and positional authority over the DKSN. I only had general authority over the SPC.

No, and that doesn’t just apply to other services. Generally speaking, orders from a higher rank only apply within the chain of command. If you need something from someone outside of your chain, the proper procedure is to go up your own chain to an appropriate level where the request can then go down that person’s chain. If an army captain were to walk into a personnel office and order a private who was filing papers to drop what he was doing and help him with something, there’s a good chance the captain would later get chewed out.

While true, it is probably also in the private’s best interest to help first and then take it up his own chain of command, unless doing so would prevent him from completing his own mission/duties. You don’t want to be the low man on the totem pole when you find that the captain may have extra favor somewhere along the line.

That’s pretty standard for just about any comment section. The discourse has gotten so sour and filled with extremist views (at both ends of whatever extreme is applicable, and sometimes from extremes that are nowhere near applicable but the poster just wanted to _share_) that reasoned comment has been drowned out for so long leading to few trying anymore.
