# Civilization 5 question

My friend and I played Civilization 5 on the Medieval start recently.

We found no Ruins - is this a bug, or to be expected?

I do not remember the setup options for Civ5. However, in Civ6 there is a setting to turn them off.

The first thing I would check is the advance setup features.

I was able to [find this excellent summary](https://www.reddit.com/r/civ/comments/1meolj/starting_a_game_in_later_eras/) (reddit post) of the start states. I think the second line, “NoGoodies,” refers to the ruins and they are indeed disabled by default in the medieval start. So it was working as intended.
