I’m not sure what is this lag you’re talking about, but my problem is that the freaking game takes forever to figure out whether I have more units that need handholding or not. I’m wearing down my W key
Lag means from the time I press next turn until the computer allows me to move my unit. That is, the time the computer uses to work out the AI moves.
Bastards advertised it for pre order “to be released on the 19th” and after I pre-ordered on the 18th, changed the release date to the 22nd. Ooh thanks so much for charging me 50% extra and making me wait three days longer. Can’t think why people stoop to piracy
Yeah well, I get pre-lag in that sometimes it says “next movement” and then it realizes there’s a laborer who got scared and then it goes back to “next movement” and…
Add when it gets stuck on “set production” (sorry, the bloody thing doesn’t let me play in English, I had to do a reinstall and it doesn’t let you choose language, and I can’t remember what it says in English) despite every city having received orders already, and the only reason I ever open it is because sometimes I forget how bad this gets.
The time between turns is nowhere near as bad as the time within turns.
Nava, I’m not sure what you mean by time between turns as opposed to time within turns?
And no one ever say I’m not profligate. I decided $45 USD was only about $44.98 Australian so I have pre ordered.
Tiem between turns: what you called lag.
Time within turns:
time between getting the first “you can move now” until the game finally pops the “wait a minute” message instead of another “unit awaiting orders” (where? oh, I see, a worker got scared seeing a neighbor’s warrior unit four hexes away), “pick a policy” (already did), “pick production” (already did)…
Part of the issue seems to be that the game tries to move automated units at the end of the turn (after I click “next turn”) rather than at the beginning (or after I say “do automated stuff”), but partly it simply doesn’t seem to flag correctly which entities already have their orders.
Nava, do you use “Auto unit cycle”? It can be annoying at times but takes you direct to the unit requiring orders. Yes, the thing about a barbarian being within 5 hexes of a worker is annoying mainly cause I don’t realise it has stopped. I’m looking away or something.
Well, yeah. We’re talking about changes to the game as built from the start, not a mod.
Another 6 hours until Gods and Kings unlocks
Auto Unit Cycle, Auto-end-turn, no animations… it’s less painful than the standard settings, but it still does tend to get stuck on “Set Production” if I forget I’m not supposed to set it before the stupid game asks for it.
At least it’s not a human being, I’ve met a few whose thought processes were on a par with the unit-counter part of CivV’s AI.
Mind you, I’ll merrily admit that I find the language thing an irritant as well, so I’m irritated to begin with. Not being able to recognize the Ballad of John Henry, OK. But - the Bible? I was able to choose language on the initial install (from disks), but the reinstall simply has decided I shall play in Spanish.
Now if I can find where the fuck I put my copy of the Civ IV disks…
Just as a suggestion, I’d start a new thread for Gods and Kings, otherwise people will read the OP and may think it’s about the one little patch rather the expansion and leave the thread. I’m not going to start it myself as I’m not plan on getting it until at least the first round of sales, but I’d be interested to read thoughts about it.
MacUpdate has the expansion for $20. People on the civfanatics forum report that the key works for both the Mac and PC versions. By far the best deal I found.
As for me I think I’ll give this a pass. I really wanted to like Civ 5, but the game’s fundamental flaws with AI, outrageous costs of building and units, and completely opaque diplomacy with bipolar opponents completely killed my enjoyment. I heard later patches fixed some of this, but with Diablo 3 competing for my attention I just can’t find the motivation to play.
I’d agree. I was going to do it but wasn’t certain if there was enough interest. If someone else hasn’t done it I will start one a little later.
Started the thread about the expansion over here: Civ V: Gods & Kings.
