# Clarify. Is the NCAA effectively "blackballing" Bruce Pearl?

It looks like the penalty is to prevent him from getting another NCAA coaching job for 3 years. The term “show cause” seems to lack description.

I’d appreciate it if some NCAA rules wonks would explain the implications of the penalty.

[Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Show-cause_penalty)has a fairly good description, as well as other examples of coaches who have been hit with show cause penalties. Short answer: yes, he’s effectively been banned from coaching at the college level.

I’m having a hard time finding information on the history of the penalty, but it was my impression (although I could easily be wrong) that the intention was to prevent another Jerry Tarkanian, where all three of his NCAA teams were hit with major rules violations.

p.s. Apparently he is now putting his degree in Marketing to good use at a vegetable wholesaler.

Watch out for the E. Coli or Salmonella or whatever to suddenly appear.
