Classic football (soccer) quote

There were some after-the match interviews included in those clips aswell :stuck_out_tongue:

If it was from his TV presenting, it wouldn’t have to have been an England-Germany match. The Germany-Argentina match in the 2006 World Cup is a likely contender for it to have been a signing-off line.

It is always attributed, when attributed, to after the 1990 match. Mind you, that doesn’t really make sense, since that match was 120 min. plus penalties, but there you go.

Would be fun to really run this one down…

The article I linked to that included the quotation was written in October 2000.

Hmm… does the BBC have some sort of person you can write and ask “stupid” questions? (Swedish telly has something of that sort). That person might be able to point one in the true direction.

off to rummage BBC.s homepage

Where do you get that from? It says 23 June 07 at the top, and also references Casey Stone, b.1985, as being 21 years old.

The Gary Lineker attribution definitely predates 2006 by many years.
[ETA] You’re looking at the wrong link. amarone’s says 4th October 2000.

Gotcha. Apologies.

It’s definitely older than July 1996 when it was quoted in a Berlin newspaper (cite).

(As you can imagine the quote is pretty well known in Germany. If you want to write an article ranting about the decline of German football and you have no pretensions of originality then that’s your opening sentence.)
