Not you, my cultured friend. Your post was the first response and you were fully on board and relevant with [my music appreciation essay](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/borodins-prince-igor-overture-beautiful-but-fraught/959566/2). Thank you.

I remember that thread. Looking at it again, I see that I did contribute one post to the hijack. Sorry about that. Your original post was quite informative. I know very little about Russian classical music, except the standard list of Tchaikovsky’s greatest hits: Swan Lake, the 1812 Overture, the Nutcracker, etc. In particular, apart from the name, I know almost nothing about the Five, or the Mighty Handful, or whatever you want to call them.

More accurately, the “Mighty Three Plus Balakriev and Cui.”

Not just those:

Hot Diggity (Chabrier’s _España_).

Nature Boy is reminiscent of a piece by Dvorak that I can’t quite remember ☹

Bernstein’s _New York, New York_ from _On The Town_ is pretty much the same theme as in Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet.

And also from Borodin via _Kismet_ are _Baubles, Bangles and Beads_ and _And This Is My Beloved_

And “Somewhere” from _West Side Story_ is lifted directly from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5.

I can’t hear the opening notes of _Enter Sandman_ without thinking that the Yankees are about to win a game. There are other baseball closer songs but none so iconic. Maybe _Wild Thing_ from **Major League**.

Similarly, when the first notes of _Sweet Caroline_ start up I’m transported to Fenway park in the middle of the 8th inning. I love hearing _Dirty Water_ since I associate it with the Red Sox winning, but that song has other positive connotations as well.

Negatively, I can’t hear _Rock and Roll_ by Gary Glitter without associating it with his criminal history.
